I initially rated this 3 stars, but after sitting on my thoughts for a few hours I have to drop it down to 2 stars. I’m pretty bummed about it because I was absolutely loving the first half. I liked the set up behind Amanda and Jack’s initial encounter and their easy chemistry from the start. However, for reasons I won’t go into because of spoilers, this totally went downhill for me after about 60%. The 3rd act conflict was messy, the poor communication and immaturity was annoying, and the ending was super anticlimactic. I just couldn’t find it in me to care about the romance or the storyline. It probably didn’t help that I went into this with super high expectations, considering Lisa Kleypas is one of my favorite authors and I rarely rate her books below 4 stars.

3.5 - great book, but a little long winded near the middle. Honestly, the book would benefit most from cutting out the middle (and the godforsaken love triangle) completely. I loved Jack and Amanda so much; I just wished we readers had been spared the unnecessary drama. Honestly, one of the best things about Julia Quinn novels (for all their characterization problems and exceedingly safe plot lines) is their ability to forgo unnecessary drama - a talent I really wish Kleypas had.

I simply adore this book and the heroine. It's the perfect introduction into historical romance. The audiobook is excellent, too.
