This story brought back memories of my first year of university. I’d recommend this to new adults who are seeking coming of age stories that edge beyond the young adult years. Cont'd on blog: https://paperwanderer.wordpress.com/2016/11/08/songs-that-sound-like-blood-by-jared-thomas/

This story was very thoughtfully written and explores the transition from high school to university in the context of the specific challenges faced by Indigenous Australians. I particularly liked the depth of characters, and how the people Roxy interacts with were each fleshed into real individual people rather that just background characters. It really highlighted the diversity of experiences.
I also thought Jared Thomas did a good job of demonstrating the systems of oppression Roxy was living in naturally.
