What a journey this book took me on! It’s set in the 1600’s and I learned a bit of history while reading about the Owens women. I’m so happy to know there’s another book in the series left for me to read! Magic is so fascinating, and this book tells what happens when you mess around with left-handed (black) magic. It kept me guessing along the way about what would happen to these remarkable women, but I was satisfied with the ending. 5-stars all the way!

I did 50/50 reading and audiobook for this one because I could noooottttt get into this book no matter how hard I tried!!! I'm actually sort of relieved it's over, I came SO CLOSE so many times to DNF-ing this...and I feel terrible saying that because Practical Magic & Rules of Magic are amazing (I haven't read the 4th book in this series yet). If this book had been reduced by about 50% of its content, it would have been much more enjoyable. There were WAY too many lists, charms/spells, and 'lessons' that I feel didn't add a whole lot to the story and just felt like it weighed everything down.

I did make sure to pay special attention to the last 15%-ish of the book to understand the Owens' family lore that bleeds into the 2 main books, and that was kind of fun. The middle 50% of the book I listened to on audio while I was working and wasn't even really paying attention to the story and was able to pick right back up at the end and not be lost, so I think that kind speaks to how much filler was in this book. I wouldn't read this again but I'm glad I read it at least once.
