King Bidgood's in the Bathtub by Audrey Wood

All day long and well into the night, King Bidgood is enjoying his bath so much that he makes everyone else join him instead of getting out. He hosts mock naval battles, lunch, fishing, and a masquerade ball. Oh, who knows what to do?! (spoiler alert: his Page does! *glub, glub, glub!*)

I wasn't sure how well this would go over when I read it to a preschool storytime because you really have to look at the pictures to appreciate the story, but the kids LOVED it. The repetition of, "...King Bidgood's in the bathtub, and he won't get out!..." had one little boy throwing up his hands by the end and saying, "Not AGAIN!" The parents and other children all laughed or nodded vigorously in response, and my own chuckling made it somewhat difficult to read the rest of the story. It ended up being really interactive to have the kids look at the pictures and announce what was happening in the tub throughout the day.

It comes with a CD, but I haven't listened to that yet.

King Bidgood is in the bathtub; and he won't get out! A knight, the queen, a duke, and the whole court attempt to get him out through various tactics...but it's the page's idea that finally encourages the king to get out of the bathtub.

Very intricate illustrations.

King Bidgood's in the bathtub and he won't get out! He creates a fuss for the entire kingdom and brings everyone into the tub. It doesn't end until the Page finds a solution.

Bidgood's story is a classic picture book. The art is larger than life and beautifully detailed. A big book is a great way to share this story with a large audience. The story also has a phrase that a crowd can repeat together.

Theme: Washing
Additional themes: royalty, baths

Cute book! I haven't read it since I was littlr, so it was fun rereading it.
I don't feel like I can really rate this until I read it with a child.... is that cheating?

My husband gifted me this book as a birthday or Christmas present sometime in the first year of our marriage because he knows how much I love children's books and it was one of his favorites as a child--such a great, meaningful gift! Now, a couple of years later, I've read it dozens of times in the last couple of months to our 21-month-old. She loves pointing out familiar details on each page, and the repetitive text really lends itself to her participation. When she wants me to read it to her, she brings it to me and says "Hep, hep!", imitating the page's cry for help every few pages-- "Help, help! King Bidgood's in the bathtub and he won't get out!" Don Wood's illustrations are lovely and nuanced and detailed!
