All I can saw is this book is just as good as the first time I read it! The character of Fire is fantastic and Kristin Cashore knows how to write fully fleshed out characters. Every character, other than maybe the villains, had motivations, feelings, and dreams that fed deeper into the story overall. I think the world building suffers a little because of this focus on characters, but I don't mind as it truly becomes a book where characters take center stage. Being a woman and the politics of existing in the world, even this fantasy one, were a major theme throughout this novel and I appreciate that Fire has difficulty navigating it. Cashore really puts us in her head and we get to see bit by bit her healing and figuring out what she wants her place in the world to be. In addition, I appreciate how openly Cashore discusses women's sexual pressure, sexual experiences, and reproductive choices. I know people might think that is inappropriate for teens, but Cashore shows in detail Fire's thought process in regards to these discussions, they are not a deus machina that allows for sexual promiscuity of characters (I wouldn't care if it was... be a slut baby). I don't remember these parts of the book looking back, but as an adult women it is so revolutionary to see that all discussed.

I liked this book in the series slightly more than Graceling, as it feels like Cashore refined her points and writing. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for an interesting read that is thought provoking, adventurous, and at times dark!

Also, want to say the audio book was amazing! Xanthe Elbrick did a great job. She easily created different voices for different characters, and really embodied them well!
