A fun, charming introduction to coding in a colorful picture book!

Fun book!

Love the concept but the execution falls flat. Need prior knowledge of coding. Doesn't bode well as a read aloud.

I read this to a group of Grades 3-6 kids for a program on coding. First, I read them this book, which takes place at the end of summer as the protagonist wants to build a sand castle with the help of her robot. She explains how coding is essentially telling the robot what to do and how she has to break down the bigger goal into smaller problems. It does a good job of simplifying the concept of coding.

After I read the story, I passed out iPads to the kids and had them try out Spritebox, a side-scrolling app that teaches coding principles while also functioning as a game. The kids LOVED it. They enjoyed the book, and they really loved the app. At first, it's very simple, but as the levels progressed, they needed a little help working through it. I always reminded them, "Take it one block at a time. What's the first thing you need to do?" They had a lot of fun, learned the basics of coding, and practiced their problem-solving skills. A super successful and EASY program to facilitate. Will be repeating this in the future!

I wasn't sure if a kids' storybook about coding would be tolerable, but I was pleasantly surprised by this Girls Who Code book. The story holds together and kept me reading, while also introducing coding concepts and terms. Highly recommend for kiddos who are just dipping their toes into coding/robotics!! Ages 6-10.

A good book on process.

Pearl is going back to school and she hasn't built a sandcastle yet. Since she doesn't have much time, she gets a robot to help her. A fantastic introduction to coding as it describes what coding is and basic terminology.

** review to come **

Great book on the conceptual aspects of coding for K-2.

Great book to use for introducing some coding terms and explaining what it is.
