So this was insane. At no point in the story did I know what was going to happen next. Absolutely twisted & sick. So many layers & complexities. I think it’s pretty obvious from the lulls in the plot’s execution (as well as the weird descriptions of the children in the story) that this is a debut.
The ending is super rushed; I think Camille’s flashbacks could have been more spread out in the last half of the novel. In dissent with some of the other reviews on this story, I actually really liked the reveal coming from Camille’s repressed memories instead of being shown actively through the plot. I think it did her character justice by allowing her to get closure about her own confusion about her past & the death of her sister. It also fits more appropriately with the introspective tone of Camille’s narrative.
Sharp Objects is absolutely wild, and not for the faint of heart.
CW: self harm, murder, child abuse, sexualization of minors

I read this book in less than 24 hours out of morbid fascination, and now I never want to think about it again. Whether because of the main characters’ choices or internalized misogyny, the gory violence, the whiplash of characterization for some secondary characters, the age-gap sex and drug bender, or the avalanche-esque pacing… my upper lip was curled in disgust for probably half of this book.
It was gripping, and had many beautiful lines amidst its flaws, but the rushed ending was the cherry on top of the bitter taste that this book left in my mouth. That was brutal and now I need to scrub my brain.

What an amazing thriller! I only wish I hadn't watched the TV series before reading the book. It's beautifully written to a level I haven't found in many thriller / mystery books. The twisty turns keep you guessing right to the end. Small town, tight community and secrets keep it stifflingly close. 100% recommend.
