3.4 AVERAGE

3.75/5 stars

The first part of this book is a retelling of the beloved movie, and it was great to revisit the movie plot via a physical book.

The second part is the new story which takes place 25 years after the original story. It was great to see where some old characters ended up, and to get to know some new characters. I love that modern technology was a part of the plot. And my very favorite part is the fact that it includes an LGBT love interest story line as well as having POC characters which is something we don't see nearly enough of in the YA world- so major props for that.

The formula of the sequel is similar to that of the original story... and at times did have more of a fan-ficiton feel to it than I would have liked, which ultimately is what knocked this down from a 4 or 4.5 star read for me. It wasn't terrible by any stretch, and something I think fans of the original would at least enjoy... but it was lacking something special that the original had.

I will say, I am looking forward to the eventual television movie adaptation of this story.

I expected it to be better written. It was progressive for a Disney novel but I'm disappointed.

I can't even handle this book, and I ESPECIALLY cannot handle the ending.

It's just a bunch of hocus pocus, and I absolutely adored it.

I actually think this will be a prefect halloween read! I think for younger kids who never watched the movie (the horror!!) the first part of this book was nice recap of the original story. But i was really invested in part two. I liked how the leads were connected to the family overall but also how different the story was. I just loved how diverse the cast was and also how the magic effected the story. I really enjoyed learning more about the sanderson family! It was super fun read and I think it will make a great fall read!

Part One: A rushed version of the script, but written in novel form. A fun return to the magic of my all-time favorite Halloween movie!

Part Two: Pretty much the same formula as the first story and clearly written for a younger crowd. Definitely doesn’t have the original magic, but still fun to revisit characters all grown up as well as the next generation. Multiple failed attempts at recreating the original quips by Winnie. Overall, I’m still glad I read this to continue the story.

Side thought: I can’t figure out why the author uses “brunet” instead of “brunette” to describe Mary throughout the book.

I appreciate the diversity in this Disney story.

This was cute! Hocus Pocus is a forever favorite of mine, and reading a story inspired by one of my all-time favorite movies made me feel like a kid again. This was a great read to help me wrap-up this Halloween season! Thank you for the nostalgia

DID NOT FINISH: 29%

Didn’t like it

I really wish they used the book’s sequel to make Hocus Pocus 2! It was so much better than what we got!

I didn't love it; but I didn't hate it. That being said, as someone who is a pretty fast reader, it took me much longer then I expected to finish this book.

The entirety of "Part One" is just a retelling of the movie, and while there are VERY obvious nods to the added plot points to connect the two parts. I just found it extremely hard to stay interested in an almost word for word retelling.

That being said "Part Two" while cute and much easier to read then the first; it really fell flat. While there was some nods too the original/"Part One" I just felt there wasn't enough to really make this a satisfying sequel. Max and Allison's daughter, Poppy is just kind of 'there' and her friends just seem a bit under developed. They all speak and it really doesn't matter who it is, because none of them truly stand out.

In terms of plot, it's cute. Our favorite Virgin had a child who doesn't believe in her parents story of 'witches trying to suck the lives out of the children of Salem'. She goes and accidentally brings said witches back again, and then has a matter of hours to figure out how to get rid of them, or her friends and family are trapped in hell.

It just feels like for a book that focused so much on retelling the original, and asides from having a couple of the same characters there is no real connection with the original. I would have liked to see more of Poppy's interactions with Emily or Binx throughout the book. It seemed to be more of a strange tale about some high schoolers that just happen to reawaken the Sanderson Sisters, then a proper homage. Also, the weird ending that alludes to a third story..is well...unnecessary.
