Hocus Pocus & The All-New Sequel - A.W. Jantha

Hocus Pocus is beloved by Halloween enthusiasts all over the world. Diving once more into the world of witches, this electrifying two-part young adult novel, released on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the 1993 film, marks a new era of Hocus Pocus. Fans will be spellbound by a fresh retelling of the original film, followed by the all-new sequel that continues the story with the next generation of Salem teens.

Shortly after moving from California to Salem, Massachusetts, Max Dennison finds himself in hot water when he accidentally releases a coven of witches, the Sanderson sisters, from the afterlife. Max, his sister, and his new friends (human and otherwise) must find a way to stop the witches from carrying out their evil plan and remaining on earth to torment Salem for all eternity.

This has been on my want to read list for quite a while, but I finally decided it was time that I read it. Split into two parts; part one is the retelling of the classic Hocus Pocus and part two is set 25 years later.

Whilst part two is effectively fan-fiction it is a well-written fun read. Mostly featuring well-developed new characters, but with firm favourites from the original. Without ending on a cliffhanger the ending has been left open with the potential for a sequel to be written.

Rating 4/5

Now I am in the mood to watch Hocus Pocus again.

This book opens with the telling of the night that the virgin Max Dennison lights the black flame candle and brings the Sanderson sisters back to Salem to complete their evil plans. Then it jumps to now to tell the story of Max and Allison's daughter Poppy and her own battle with evil on a Halloween night.

There are small details in the first part that were not included in the movie and these are the set-up to Poppy's tale. The way the stories are linked is very well done. I truly enjoyed this story and I would love to see this as a movie. Or maybe a series, although I can't imagine anyone else as Winnie.

The first part of the book was just a repeat of the movie (probably unnecessary since most people who read it will have seen the movie) but the sequel part was pretty good. Hope they make it into a movie.

While this won't win esteemed writing awards, it's a fun escape back into childhood. I must admit, I skipped the first half as I know the movie verbatim. I agree with some of the other reviews that 2nd half does remind me of fanfic, but I was totally ok with that.

Written for a much younger audience than those who grew up with the movie, but really cute and I like the idea.
