I really enjoyed the first part, the novelization of the movie. Even if they added some extra things, I think most of it worked. The second part was very middle grade and super Disney-fied, which definitely impacted my enjoyment. But overall it is cute, even if the sequel is nowhere near as good as the original, and a good read for October.

Okay so I watched the movie for the first time last year and now i have read the book this year for the first time and then continued on into the sequel.

over all im giving it 4 stars, but that is because i enjoyed the second a little bit more than the first one.
I found the first one to be unique, was a good story concept, i enjoyed all of the characters, but the movie just didn't sit all that well for me, mostly because the big focus was on the witches eating children and that just didn't sit all the well for me. but as i said over all i did enjoy the story of the first one.

however going into the second one, i actually enjoyed that one, as it focused a lot less on the eating of children, and more on the family drama that went behind the scenes both within the main characters and within the Sanderson sisters, which ended up being connected to the new main characters. I loved that all of the characters from the first book came back into the second book, and i loved the mingling of the old faces with the new faces. I did enjoy the little bit of teenage love or attraction that was put in there, as well as learning about the childhood sweet hearts that came out of the first book leading into the second one.

As the second book ended with a bit of a lead into what sounds like a 3rd story, i am actually hoping that they do a 3rd story, and maybe touch more on the Sanderson family history, as it sounds like there is a lot of potential story there, between the 4, not 3 but 4 sisters, their mother and the other witches that were mentioned within the second book. Id also be interested to know more about the desired characters that were briefly mentioned by the other sisters when they were talking about bringing people back from the dead. So over all id want a 3rd book just to know more about the Sandersons family history and why they became the way they are.

so as i mentioned before over all im giving this a 4 out of 5 stars, mostly because the first one as i said didn't sit all the well with me, but id give that one a 3 out of 5 stars, where i really rather enjoyed the second book and would give that one a 4 out of 5 stars.

Part 1- A nearly perfect adaptation! 4 Stars.
The only thing about part 1 that I wasn't a huge fan of was the way the original story of the Sanderson sisters in 1693 was included at the beginning. I didn't like the flip-flop between eras and wish that the background information that was obviously necessary was included as a short prologue.

Part 2- A campy, light affair; Entirely average; Good, but not great. 3 Stars.
Okay so part 2 has to be taken at face value. It's a modern, teen, spooky adventure that just happens to stem from the original Hocus Pocus story. If you approach part 2 as a modern spin-off rather than a sequel, you might be more pleased with the story's outcome. I enjoyed this as a spooky preamble to the Halloween season, but started to get a bit "over it" towards the last few chapters. I wish this sequel had been a bit shorter... there were a lot of things going on and it felt a bit unnecessary.
Also,*MILD SPOILER ALERT* if you're going to do a queer-witch story line, DO IT. I loved the Poppy/Isabelle flirtation but wished that their relationship had been developed a bit more. How come Travis couldn't have been the one to be turned into a boston terrier?!

I really enjoyed the adaptation of the film into a book (mostly because it was essentially word for word the movie script) but the sequel felt more like a parody film than a cohesive sequel. Mary Sanderson feels super out of character at parts. (Especially when she starts singing and all these instruments follow her around Salem???) it’s campy like the first movie without the levity of the more serious parts. The inclusion of a fourth Sanderson sister felt like a stretch. If you need to change the original to make a sequel, you’re being lazy. Poppy and all of her friends are so one dimensional. I wanted so much to love them but there was no depth to any of the characters. Explaining where the characters from the original are now was the best part of the sequel and it was a very minuscule part. Overall this felt rushed and lazy. I was super disappointed with this book and I feel gypped out of $12.
