Hocus Pocus - 5
All new sequel - 2.5

The retelling of the original movie is absolutely adorable and so perfect! It is so nostalgic and quirky. A perfect representation of the movie that so many people love and are so familiar with. There are so many references and direct lines from the movie included in the story that the book really takes on the same vibe as the beloved film. If the whole book could have kept up that same feel, I would have loved it. Unfortunately, the sequel was less nostalgic and more hokey. The story felt forced and read a lot like rookie fanfiction. I genuinely enjoyed the first part of the novel. I had low expectations for the retelling and it blew me away. I wish the whole book had been just the novelization of the movie. If you love Hocus Pocus the movie I think you would enjoy this just be aware that the Sequel can't keep up with the original.

Hocus pocus and all that 😊
I fairly enjoyed this book.
I loved reading about the story of the film.
I liked that it went back and forwards in time to line up to what happened in 1693 to skipping to 1993.

The second part was good I liked the fact that it tells you what happened to dani, Alison and Hollywood and its their daughter and niece who it happens to this time.
Keeping it going in the family they must be cursed lol.
I loved that binx was back for a little while and his funny comment to poppy the daughter of Alison and Hollywood.
I also really like that they have left it so they could do another story for the next big anniversary 😉

Meh.

This book is proof that classics - cult or otherwise - transcend sequels.

I think this book actually ruined one of my favorite movies for me. I don't even want to watch Hocus Pocus on Halloween this year. That's how bad this was.
This is why I never purchase books full price before reading them first from the library. What a waste of money.
This book is so stupid I feel like I've lost brain cells.

"Isabella turns around and smiles at me . 'Gumption. I like it.'
'Oh, gum? I'd like a piece, please!' says Travis."

This is the kind of dumb fuckery I paid to read.
When I got to the part where Poppy couldn't find her mother with her father and Aunt Dani in hell because she was looking for the manager of that wing of hell (not even exaggerating, that happened) I had enough of the stupidest story line I've ever read and decided to skim the rest.
Surely there is better fan fiction out there somewhere they could have published into a book.

How fun is this cover?! Really well done! The back is nice too with the sequel characters. This book clocks in at about 520 pages BUT I will say it was an easy/fast read & only took a few hours (3/4) to read.

The first part is word for word the Hocus Pocus movie & i really don’t think they missed a thing. I enjoyed it & the whole movie played through my mind while I read. This story is such a cult classic & I will never grow tired of it!

I will say I generally won’t/ don’t feel the need to read a book that was written for it after the movie since it’s basically the movie script in paragraph form. I wasn’t thinking about that when I got it but yeah.... I don’t need to read the movie script... the same thing happened when I read “Interstellar”. Still this was a fun & quick read so it was all good.

Ok now onto part 2: the sequel. SO this is where a lot of people start to have negative opinions but I was ok with it. So yes - this is an iconic story that doesn’t need a sequel, & no - the sequel isn’t even close to as good as the original.

The sequel follows Allison & Max’s daughter & friends on Halloween night when she reawakens the Sanderson Sisters by accident trying to impress a girl she likes. We get a talking dog in this one...BUT i promise the story does differ from the original.

As a stand alone or like unofficially related book it was fine. I think having it linked so closely to the original just rubbed people the wrong way. They did incorporate a lot more diversity (both race & sexual orientation) & gave plenty nods and respect to the original story. It was clearly geared for a young child/teen/young adult audience so I certainly felt too old for it but it was a nice. I can see them doing like a TV movie of this one on Disney channel.

It hurts me to give a book based on a favorite Halloween movie a 1 star rating, but I really didn't like this book. I thought the writing was pretty bad. The novelization lost the magic of the movie and the sequel sucked. Hard pass.

This book was better than I was anticipating. Now, don't jump down my throat, it's just in my experience movie tie-ins with sequels no one ever expected tend to be a little lackluster. This exceeded my expectation.

Following the original story of Hocus Pocus was still entertaining even though I can recite the movie my heart. The sequel was quirky and campy with enough of a serious edge to keep it from being cloying. Do I think some of the plot points are a bit of a stretch? Sure. Was the the movie the same way? Absolutely.

Overall, this was a faithful adaptation with and enjoyable follow up.

Above all, the book reads like really good fanfiction. The first half of the book is a retelling of the movie we all know and love. The second half tells the story of Max and Allison's daughter, Poppy, who takes her best friend and her crush to the Sanderson sisters' house one night for some spirit board fun. In her attempts to impress the girl she likes, Poppy summons the witchy sisters themselves, and all chaos breaks loose. This cute book harkens back to a well-loved tale, but it’s fresh. It takes old characters and makes them new. It allows readers to delve back into the town of Salem, Massachusetts, revisiting all the scenes that captured the hearts of so many children during those October movie marathons of days passed. It’s a book that’s just plain fun to read, and it’s gay to boot.

This was beyond disappointing...but I'm not surprised at all. I LOVE Hocus Pocus. It's one of my favorite Halloween movies ever. When I heard about this sequel I was excited but hesitant. The first 200 pages of this was literally just a screenplay recap of the movie. If you have never seen the movie maybe this would be helpful...but I am assuming that most people who read this are reading it because they HAVE seen the movie and loved it. I mostly skimmed that section. The second half of the book was the actual sequel part. We follow Max and Allison's daughter Poppy and her battle with the Sanderson Sisters. While I liked....I actually can't think of anything I really liked about this. I mean there was a more diverse cast so that's a plus. The story was super rushed and boring...which is sad. Even the sisters couldn't save this. It came off SUPER juvenile (Maybe if I was still 9 year old reading this I might have actually loved it). It just felt like a waste of time. Maybe it could be redeemable in movie format (and ONLY if the original cast was back to bring it to life).

I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I love Hocus Pocus so much. The first half of this was great reading the story I love. Some of the direct lines from the movie were perfect and I read them in the characters voices. The second half was a really nice surprise. It wasn’t really what I expected but I enjoyed it a lot.
