June 2020 edit**
Changing it to a 3. After a lot of thought, this was just ok but it was a fun read purely for the nostalgia

So much nostalgia. I finished this in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. It was incredible. This was my faveorite film growing up and it's still something I hold in high regard. It was fantastic to return to the antics of the Sanderson sisters. As much as i loved this book, I gave it 4 stars but i have my reasons. (Would have been 4.5)

"Part 1"

Part one is essentially the "movie" that we all know and love and as much as I enjoyed it and there were a few extra parts and some things explained more, I couldn't help but feel if I hadn't seen the movie, the flow wouldn't make that much sense to me. There were parts that didn't translate as well in book form as they did in film form as most of the dialog was the same. The extra bits added in felt kind of forced but I guess it was to spur the plot of the sequel. But still, this took me right back to my childhood and I smiled the whole way through.

Part 2.

Had a different pace to the first part and it read more like a novel. Following Max and Allison's daughter and friends, the plot was interesting and although similar to the first part/movie (we want to live forever) it wasn't boring and it was done in a way that made it feel different and expanded on the lore of the world of Hocus Pocus more. Some highlights were the sisters discovering Instagram and Mary's musical number through Salem Common and the fact that the main protagonist was LGBQT. I loved it and it felt like a proper well written sequel to a much loved film and if they made this as an official film sequel I would be thrilled. All the old characters returned and some old storylines were expanded. (Like HOW did Jay and Ice get out of those cages)

Please don't take my negatives to heart, I absolutely adored this book and I feel like everyone who grew up on the film would adore it and it would be a perfect way to Indroduce younger kids to this beloved cult classic.

Talk about revisiting your childhood! I have loved Hocus Pocus since the very first time I saw it. I watch it multiple times around Halloween each year and many times throughout the year as well. I loved being about to revisit one of my favorite childhood movies in written form, but even better than that was the continuation of the story in Max and Allison's (YES MAX AND ALLISON'S!!!) daughter and her friends!

Interesting to me, was the fact that one of the bullys from the original movie was now principal with a bullyish daughter. Funny how things come full circle like that, both in literature and in real life sometimes! I enjoyed the friendships that Poppy had and how in the end a group of seemingly misdirected kids were able to pull together and ultimately save the day.

The best though, the absolute best, is that the ending is left so very wide open for further sequels! I would read as many as they are willing to write!

This was a book that kept me wanting to read for long periods of time. First off I have loved Hocus Pocus since it came out and when they came out with a book and a new sequel I quickly picked it up. I know that the book came out a bit ago and it sat on my self until I read it. So here it is in January and i finally picked it up. I was not sure about the sequel since I knew how the first one ended but I must say the sequel part did not disappoint!! This is a 5 star from me and will definitely be reading it again around Halloween if not sooner.

Not really sure how to rate this one. I love the movie so the novelization was easily 5 stars, but I couldn't even get through the sequel portion.

4 Stars.

Let me first start off by saying I'm considering this "completed" but I've only read the first part so far. I'm not sure when I'll get to the second part, but I definitely want to!

There's not much to say here except this is basically a book version of the movie and everything is ALMOST exactly the same.

The part I liked is that because we get inside the characters minds, unlike before, we get a little more of what is motivating them.

There's also a side plot, that maybe there are other Sanderson witches out there, that was super interesting. I have a theory. I'm sure these are based off of theories people have had for years about the original and I'm sure it plays a part in the sequel but I guess we'll have to wait until I read that part to find out!

2.5/5

Good, but the novelization was better than the sequel in my opinion.
Still worth a read but glad I didn't buy

Terrible, simply terrible! I think this is like, the worst book I've ever read. I really really want to rate it 1 star (which I've NEVER rated a book!), but I can't even do that, because the first part won't let me. Gah. I actually really liked the first part, the novelization of Hocus Pocus. I mean, it was pretty spot on, exact, word for word, the same as the movie. And because I love the movie, I of course, loved this too! It even stuck in a slight few more tidbits...thoughts to base reasoning of things that happened in the movie. It was great, and it got me hyped for the sequel portion, which may be part of why it was such a let down, though it also did that pretty well on it's own. From the very start, I was not enthralled with the story, or where our characters were in their lives, in relation to Halloween and their familial history with the Sanderson sisters. I don't know what I expected, even...and I tried to keep an open mind, to see where it would go. It was just boring, really, though...until the ended up actually getting to Halloween night and meeting the witches. And even then, halfway through the actual action portion of the sequel (the last....half? of the book), I skimmed a lot to just get done. I didn't like the witches' portrayals...you really saw Mary and Sarah so much less, their roles very unimportant, and they felt very unimportant to Whinny. Whinny felt much meaner. I didn't like Max and Allison's kid, she was such a waffler, until the witches were slapping her in the face, and the rest were just as bad. The whole story starts off with no backstory to how it is happening and took some crazy turns that just...blah. By the time we were getting to the climax, I was ready to be done. The book was SO LONG.
