Very cute story, obviously the first book is spot on with the movie, and the second brings a timely twist to the story. The witch is back!!

Nothing all too exciting in either book but, you know, the first book has the nice nostalgia factor and the second is a fun new take.
This is not a "fresh retelling" of the movie: it is an exact retelling of the movie. But I still enjoyed reading it, and I enjoyed the sequel.
Disclaimer - I have NOT seen the movie. I went into this blind, knowing it is a well loved movie. The first part was cute and the story was so fun, which made me so excited to see the movie (I will watch this week, I promise). The second part... was just a long-winded repeat of the first part. It had the exact same feel and the same plot - 'oh no witches are back we must save Salem from them', except the author tried WAY too hard to make it relevant and cooler than the first part. I think this may be the only time I will ever say - skip the book and watch the movie.
I enjoyed this book. It was very nostalgic, and the first half was a good retell of the original Hocus Pocus movie. Then, 25 years later, the witches re-emerge in the 21st century, and the pop culture references were really cute! There were a few grammar and spelling errors in the book, but overall it was a really enjoyable read.
3.5
It was cute, very nostalgic. It made me want to watch Hocus Pocus. That ending though!!

First third is the original hocus pocus story with additions of backstory and more in depth details, leading into the sequel where those things become more and more clear. Great ending leaving openings for more books in the future, LGBTQIA+ representation for young adult readers was great!
I love the movie, it's one of my favorite films growing up. When I saw this book, I had to read it. I'm glad I did. I heard that people wanted a sequel, and this is a good one.
Three stars! Three stars! Three stars!
Starting off by saying: I LOVE Hocus Pocus.
Two of my friends and I all dressed as the Sanderson sisters last year and I was Winnie.
Anyways, nostalgia very strong here. The novelization part was well done with additional scenes and conversation added to make things feel fresh, along with a small character addition that becomes important in the all new sequel.
Cover? Stunning.
Artwork throughout at the chapter headings? Gorgeous.
Now we get to the sequel. Wanted to love and adore it. Wanted this so badly to be a five star. It. Was. Not.
It had some great things going for it, don't get me wrong, the diversity, the questions answered, the family dynamics.
BUT it felt like decent quality fan fiction. (Don't throw things at me!) The scene with Mary singing? Super cringe. Sarah stuck on three word repeat stuff, repeat stuff, repeat stuff? No. The puns were fun at first but got old very quickly. A few characters didn't really ring true-Dani mostly cause I doubt she would still be saying jerk face that much as an adult. Without spoiling, a few characters make appearances that should have just been left out plain and simple and I HATED the ending.
Thus, we are left with me not hating the book but not loving it either. Sigh.

A pretty good sequel. I think it does a good job of doing the same, but different. It does a good homage to the original and builds off the lore.
