Good ideas in this, will require a re-read though. The art was great, many different styles which at times made it hard to tell who was whom.

Wow. Really. Just wow. Carol Danvers is such an amazing character. She is strong, inspirational, and so very human.

Thanks to Prime Reading, I got to read a couple of Captain Marvel comics when the movie was released for free on my Kindle app on my phone. As far as I can tell, this volume is the one that begins Kelly Sue DeConnick's run as the writer on Captain Marvel.

Before I saw the film, I knew little about Captain Marvel as a character. I knew that her book was wildly popular just from going to my local comic book store, but I never read them before. This volume is fairly good at introducing Carol Danvers to a new audience. It's the volume in which she takes up the mantle of Captain Marvel instead of being Ms. Marvel. If you're not familiar with Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel, you might be missing a bit of background. However, this volume sets up a time travel plot that mostly fills the knowledge gap that new readers may have.

Clearly, De Connick is working out some kinks in this first volume, but I like the overall vibe of this book. She has a clear understanding of who Carol Danvers is and how she comes to be Captain Marvel. I really dislike the early art, but even that gets better throughout the volume. Recommended for anyone looking for a crash course in Captain Marvel!

I'm giving this two stars simply for Dexter Soy's excellent art in the first four issues, other than that this comic is cringe-inducing garbage.

Time travel mindfucking is pretty well done. I sure as heck could have done with the Banshees having way more practical outfits. After all, they're not superheros, they're trained fighters stuck in South America looking like a corps of misplaced porn stars.
Other than that, it was a nice intro to Danvers for me.

I really enjoyed this story, although I found it somewhat muddled and confusing and struggled to follow at times. I'm sure a lot of that has to do with being very unfamiliar with the zillion storylines that precede this one in the Marvel Universe. In spite of the confusion, DeConnick tells a beautiful and moving story. The shift in artist style took some getting used to, but I enjoyed the work of both Rios and Soy.
