I'm not sure if I'm going to read the next in the series. The first one took a very long time to pick up some speed and I can't say I particularly liked the ending.
Maybe I read too much about northern gods recently but the mysteries presented and names thrown around were all very familiar to me, so the big reveals (if intended by Mead) were lost on me as I guess these identities many pages earlier.

I really enjoyed this first in the series, after having read number 2 first. Great characters, excellent world-building, intriguing plot. I can't wait for the next to come out.
I really enjoyed this book, actually more than the Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series... perhaps because the characters are a bit older? I wasn't crazy about Justin-- he reminded me a bit too much of Adrian and the egocentrism and selfishness got a bit grating. I really liked Mae and am looking forward to the next book!
Okay, I really loved this book. This is my first time reading an adult book and I just...wow.
Review to come.
Okay, so I'm finally writing my review after what seems like forever. This is my first time reviewing a book, so I hope I do well.
Anyways, like I said this book was amazing. I loved pretty much every aspect of this book. I loved the mythology, the romance (I know, I Know. I'm a total sap) the action (of both kinds)and just everything in this new supernatural world that Richelle has created.
I'm not gonna lie. At first it was confusing as hell and I didn't really understand what was going on until the middle of the book. But when I gave it a second read, I could appreciate how she wrote it.
I've only read her VA and Bloodlines series and in that world she jumps right into explaining what that world is in the first few chapters. (A lot of books do this actually) and I appreciated how she wrote this one. It sort of just flowed without cramming it all in the beginning.
Anyways, onto the protagonists: Mae, Justin and Tessa. This book is told from their point of views in third person. I've seen a lot of reviews saying they didn't like that but I loved it. Especially the chapter titles.
Mae: For some reason, I think of her as a mix of Rose and Sydney (from VA and Bloodlines) and with her own characteristics of course. Mae is a person who relies on logic and facts and doesn't like the supernatural (sound familiar?) who can also kick your ass without even tangling up her hair (also sound familiar?)
But she is also very, very controlled and distant from her feelings. Maybe it's a praeortian thing or just a Mae thing.
Either way she is one of my fave badass protagonists.
Justin: Charming, fucked up Justin. He is like Adrian what with having bad vices (alcohol, women, etc..) but they are completely different. Sure, they're both flirts and a bit arrogant but that's where the similarities end. Justin is ridiculously smart in a different way and he has a lot of shit in his life. He got kicked out of R.U.N.A which was his home. SO yeah, he got a bit depressed.
What I didn't like was how...presumptuous he was. But other than that, he is easily one of my faves.
Tessa: Sweet, innocent Tessa. To be honest, I think she's my favorite character in the book. I wish we had more time with her. I love that she's innocent but not naive, like so many characters I've read about. I also love how she makes friends with the "bad group". She actually reminds me of myself in that aspect. We're both the 'goody two shoes with good grades'. So I can relate with her. And I just loved the part where she got a bit drunk and sort of broke in and it was Mae's friends that returned her home. That prank was mean but funny.
So, even though it was a bit obvious to me which God Justin chose I immensely enjoyed this book. I can't wait for the second installment. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves mythology, a kind of twisted romance, and strong protagonists.

The beginning was a little slow and I didn't really start to get into it until about halfway through the book. Also, I felt like Richelle didn't do a great job explaining some of the things in her novel. Not as a great as her other novels, but it was still pretty good.
There are some amazingly accurate views for this book so I don't need to recreate the wheel.
Quick opinion/recap:
I love Richelle Mead's books--all of them--except this one. This one is sub-par.
The first half (seriously--the first 200 pages) were mind-numbingly boring; lacking the spark Mrs. Mead usually has in her writing. I almost put the book down and called it quits. After reading several reviews I decided to reach halfway and then decide if I should quit. I persevered and am happy I did. Obviously I still don't think the book is awesome--I gave it a 3--but it managed to redeem itself enough that I feel confident that the 3 isn't just because I'm fond of Ms. Mead.
I will be reading the second book because I did manage to find enough of the story to care about at the end.

Finally a well written dystopia book.
After the onslaught catastrophe debut of dystopian books. I had given up on reading this genre but every once and a while you'll come across with a book that will prove you wrong. And Gameboard of the Gods is this book!
After being involved in a gruesome brawl Mae Koskinen was given a mission to bring back the exile Justin March to Runa. And when they were assigned to work together they unravel some horrifying things that go against in everything what they believe.
Id have to say that one of my favorite things about Gameboard is it’s writing and another thing is that unlike some novels nowadays the whole plot isn't rushed and If you had a chance to read Richelle Mead previous novels. You would know that she has a knack of slowly building her characters and plot before driving her story to complexity. And one cannot deny that she knows her craft really well.
This book was told in Mae, Justin and Tessa’s point of view. As the story unfolds, we get to meet and see separately what’s going on with their lives. They each held a piece of giving the story a different kind of flavors.
And I can say this new set of fully freshed characters are very relatable, realistic, they are flawed yet they manage to let me in their world and moved my heart.
Age of X series hold a promising debut. It’s thrilling and captiving. I thoroughly enjoyed this book with it’s very engaging plot. The romance will leave you breathless. Reading this book is like breathing a fresh of new air.

This was quite fun and gripping. Some of it was pretty predictable, but not in a bad way. I had a hard time putting it down.
