This is a tough one for me. I loved Still Alice, and I really wanted to love this book just as much!
A few things I did appreciate:
1. It was clearly written from an educated perspective of someone who understood the medical and emotional side of ALS
2. The author did not try to make anything beautiful out of the disease. There was no sugar coating, nor an attempt to make the story something beautiful the way that other books like these might. It was just real.
That being said, I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. They all honestly annoyed me. I also found there to be a lack of character development and plot.
A few things I did appreciate:

Beautiful read. Pulled at the heart strings. Really enjoyed this read being a nurse. Such a great reminder.

Lovely book! Truly! I enjoyed it a lot. I think Genova has such a unique style and ability for story telling that it just made it an easy, but sad read! It only took me a while as I was burnt out from moving and needed a break!

Từng nốt nhạc ngân có lẽ quá ‘thật’ cho một cuốn tiểu thuyết.
Nhân vật chính trong truyện là Richard, một nghệ sĩ dương cầm đại tài không may mắc chứng ALS (bệnh xơ cứng teo cơ), căn bệnh khiến Stephen Hawking phải dính chặt vào xe lăn. Ngón tay, cánh tay, chân, thậm chí cả giọng nói, Richard phải lần lượt chấp nhận việc mất đi từng thứ một. Không còn khả năng tự chăm sóc bản thân, Richard buộc phải chuyển về ở với Karina, vợ cũ- người mà anh đã phản bội, rồi bị phản bội…
Một mặt, y đánh giá rất rất cao khía cạnh y khoa của Từng nốt nhạc ngân. Cả tiểu thuyết như một cuốn hồi ký của bệnh nhân ALS, ghi nhận những biến chuyển theo từng ngày. Cả việc người bệnh sẽ cảm thấy gì lẫn các thách thức của việc chăm bệnh đều được mô tả hết sức chi tiết. Có cảm giác như tác giả đang quá sa đà vào việc viết một quyển Cẩm nang chăm sóc bệnh nhân ALS 101 vậy.
Mặt còn lại, tức khía cạnh văn học của tác phẩm, đáng tiếc thay, lại được khai thác chưa tốt. Mối quan hệ giữa Richard và Karina phức tạp và đầy thù hận. Không ai trong cả hai là người đúng, và cũng chẳng ai hoàn toàn sai. Họ là những nhân vật mang tính đời thực cao, nhưng chẳng hiểu sao khi được đặt vào trong câu chuyện này thì lại không gây cho y cảm tình hay đồng cảm. Thực tế thì phần lớn thời gian đọc, y chỉ tò mò muốn biết chuyện gì xảy ra tiếp theo, chứ không mảy may quan tâm liệu các nhân vật này sẽ bị ảnh hưởng thế nào, hoặc cảm thấy ra sao. Đọc chỉ để biết cái kết.
Thêm nữa là không rõ vì bản dịch, hay vì tác phẩm gốc đã như vậy, nhưng y không cảm được cách hành văn của Từng nốt nhạc ngân. Một câu chuyện tưởng chừng phải thấm đẫm nước mắt bỗng trở nên khô khan vì phải gánh gồng quá nhiều kiến thức y khoa và một cốt truyện cũng kém phần hấp dẫn.
Những ai sau khi xem Me before you và đang đợi chờ một mối tình lãng mạn, hoặc The theory of everything và hy vọng một câu chuyện cảm động ắt hẳn sẽ bị thất vọng nặng nề với cuốn này.

Beautifully told story of a celebrated pianist who is dying of ALS, and its effect on everyone around him. I really learned a lot about the physical symptoms of this disease. Lisa Genova paints a descriptive picture of the toll the disease takes on the patient and the family.
I enjoyed this novel, and appreciate the care that Genova took with this delicate subject.
