I won’t be reading another of McFadden’s books after this one. I had it available on audio and it was quick, so I put it on without any digging into the plot or themes. Gross glorification of teacher-student “relationships,” which is obviously my biggest issue with it.
Secondarily, this book is the second of hers I’ve read where she has used an unreliable narrator to lazily cover a twist. Also, using even more grooming and SA as a “twist” is disgusting.

Genuinely one of the best books I’ve ever read. It gets uncomfortable at times and even a little triggering, but there are so many plot twists you nearly forget! The ending is not something I could’ve predicted in a million years and I am an avid reader. 10/10!!! *check trigger warnings beforehand*

I read this as part of a book club. It went quickly, and I did have a need for knowing how it ended—but ugh. I didn’t like the characters. As an educator, I was super annoyed by these “teachers” in this book. It is a quick read—and if you just want a brainless story, it does the job. Unsettling “twists.” I thought it was predictable, though.  But I did not enjoy the writing style or gaps in character development and minor plot issues.
I read two books by this author for the same book club—and this one I preferred to the other, “Never Lie.”

This book was incredible and a bit disturbing. I loved the big shock at the ending that I didn’t even have a lie was going to happen! Amazing! I definitely loved this book even with the controversial topic of teacher student relationships. The author did an incredible job with the characters and making it hard to know who to love/hate for a bit.

Eve has been a high school math teacher for years and has had no issues with a student until Addie Severson is put in her class this school year. Addie is the cause for Eve’s mentor Mr Tuttle losing his job the previous years. Were the rumors true? She was told to be careful around this student. But how careful does she really need to be?

Almost dnf-d it because the first half seemed heavily like it will glorify the student/teacher relationship and set the wife against the girl.
But then it started to come around, and we acknowledged it's not Addie's fault.
But THEN at the very very end, that one reveal was so uncalled for, why did we need more pedophilia in there? To see how the abused continues the cycle? But she didn't know she was doing that. Ughhh.
