A novella about the sad life of a servant. It's well-written and bleak (which is mostly a good thing for books as far as I'm concerned), but I didn't find it fully engaging.

Enchanting novelette--not quite as good as his Madame Bovary, but I think this is merely because, as a short story, it lacks the depth that dialogue provides for a well-constructed novel. The beauty of a simple life is illustrated in the fictitious account of this French maid.

I'm very disappointed by this book. I expected it to be very good because I really enjoyed "Madame Bovary"( one of my favourite french classics). It turned out that I wasn't right. The idea of the book that a simplistic life also has a meaning is great but I just didn't get into the story, which is very sad. 60 pages of torture, sorry Flaubert <333

I was really disappointed by this novella. There is no plot and no character development. There wasn't enough to really get me to see the importance of this story. I'm still trying to figure out what the author wanted the readers to understand. Depressing story!
