This simple short story focuses on the life of a maid, Felicite. A life of hard work, bad luck in love, loss and religion. It’s gently humorous but not unsympathetic to her despite the other characters lack of interest.

Sometimes you have to read something, not because you want to, but because you are forced to. Often times, it's a story you end up loving. This was NOT one of those times. The parrot was, by far, the most interesting character ... despite (or perhaps DUE TO) his limited dialogue. What an uneventful tale of a woman with the worst luck in the world. Reading this was like hanging out with a friend who complains too damn much. You just keep wondering when it's going to stop.

I am a little bit conflicted about stories like A Simple Heart. It tells the rather bleak life of a servant girl. And while I like that the main character is not a hero of some sort or very special, it does not make for the most engaging type of story.

The writing was nice though.

Flaubert'le aram çok iyi değildir; ama bu üzücü öyküyü üzülerek sevdim. Zavallı Félicité'nin kimsesizliği başarıyla resmedilmiş...

“In her mind, the one became associated with the other, the parrot becoming sanctified by connection with the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit in turn acquiring added life and meaning. Surely it could not have been a dove that God had chosen to speak through, since doves cannot talk. It must have been one of Loulou’s ancestors.

I guess this one just wasn’t for my taste. I found it too heavy on the religious side, and the characters uninteresting. The plot itself felt dull (despite tragic moments and parrot-worshiping of sorts, so you can imagine the dullness was a special type of overwhelming). Unfortunately, I can’t say I enjoyed this much.
