I'm not sure if I would have liked this more or less had I actually read the book versus listening on audio. I think it started off well, and I think it ended well. But there was a point where I lost focus for a brief period, and I never got fully caught up with the story again. It's like I knew what was happening, but not really. I don't know... I'm not sure if audios are good for me unless that's all I'm doing and not trying multitask. I just can't process the book when I'm doing other things. Meh...
Well I liked that more than I thought I would. Rtc

"During our expedition, a whole group of people were mutilated in an inhuman fashion. I know the first question that pops into your mind: What were the rocks like?"
Pretty solid book if someone wants to read about an Artic (or Antarctic) expedition, but will sorely disappoint people who came here trying to find The Thing or The Abyss or some other story with Old Ones. I appreciate the work and it's influence on film and fiction, but I find Lovecraft's obsession with taxonomy, and his obsession with grounded academic perspective, more dull than interesting.

i preferred the afterword that wasn’t written by Lovecraft to what Lovecraft actually wrote

Mountains!
Madness!
Elder gods!
idk, I'm new here.
What I liked:
Madness!
Elder gods!
idk, I'm new here.
What I liked:
- Spooky, atmospheric writing that's reminiscent of Poe
- Gave me the creeps a little
- Narrator for the audio version is great
What I didn't like:
- The story was definitely weird, but not really *scary*, I was expecting nightmare-level creepiness
- Lovecraft was a horrible person but a great writer so I have mixed feelings 😕
