I was very surprised by how funny, insightful, and perennially relevant Pushkin is. Obviously translation of poetry depends a lot on the translator, and this translation had a wonderful sound and shape, it was engaging and delightful. A pleasure to read, direct, reflective— I see why Pushkin is venerated!

the deadly inhumanity of social convention. Onegin is its bearer in this work. His induction into selfishness, vanity, and indifference occupies the introduction, and he is unable to escape it when he moves to the country.

Despite some points that drag a little, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I listened on audiobook and the narrator was very whimsical and emotionally in-tune with the story. It’s very well done. 4.5 stars.

🪆 As much as he was not an admirable character by any means, at least in most cases, I was sympathetic to Onegin. I feel like Russian literature tends to focus on the darker aspects of the human soul, creating a sort of understanding of certain behaviors and actions that would otherwise merely draw forth your judgment. In a different story, Onegin could be the villain. But here we are concerned for him rather than critical.
🪆 Tatiana one the other hand, is pure heroine. There is only room for empathy where she is concerned.
🪆 I liked the translation but Falen. He seems to have done an excellent job of preserving the wit, flow, conversational tone,and sparkling nature of Pushkin's poetry.
🪆I could have done without some of the tangents. Also, in chapter 7 I would have liked more about Onegin and in chapter 8, more of Tatiana. Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyable!

I love love love Pushkin. I don’t usually (never) read novels in verse, but Pushkin has a way with writing, so it’s a must. Kudos to the translater, they did a good job.
