this was so cute

Love this book!

It perfectly captures the feelings of being a fresher in such a raw way. As I read it I thought of my friends from university, who I’m still very close to. I can’t imagine my life without them, and I definitely can’t imagine what my uni experience would have been like without them.

Ellen and Ivison’s writing blends so well. You can tell how close they are. Additional proof of their friendship can be found in the front of my copy of this book, where Lucy has forged Tom’s signature perfectly (her words).

I wasn't expecting much from a young adult romance about college freshmen, but the longer this book went on the less I cared about it. It's not a horrible book, but it's so focused on creating complicated romance situations that it forgets to have anything else that matters, like well-developed characters or eventually, any mention of college actually going on.

It was really refreshing to read a YA set at a British university (Fangirl is my only other Uni-age example and that's in the US). I felt this book portrayed university life really well, particularly those first uncertain months away from home. Although set in York, I imagined my own Uni campus when I was reading, which shows you how easy it is to slip back into that world and how universal the experience is. There were so many familiar moments in this book.
It’s also a book full of humour and cringe-worthy events (poor Phoebe has more than her fair share!) I loved the dual perspective between Luke and Phoebe and seeing their two different (but interwoven) freshers experiences. My favourite characters were Frankie - who is hilarious and stole every scene she was in - and also Josh, who was such a sweetie. I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who’s about to start University, is already a student or, like me, wants to re-live their Uni days.

I wanted to read Freshers as soon as I heard about it as books set at University are pretty rare and I only wish I had more books in this genre when I was starting out to make me feel less apprehensive about going.

This book was brilliant in capturing the confusing and intense experience that is the first term of university.  I was a fan of Lucy and Tom’s previous book Lobsters that had such funny, realistic dialogue and this book was even better.

I especially loved Frankie who was a fantastically hilarious character and there is a scene in the book involving her, Phoebe and Negin that is so absolutely laugh-out loud funny I had tears streaming from my eyes. I don’t want to spoil it but I think you will know exactly what bit I am talking about when you get to it. The book deserves five stars for that scene alone! Fiction doesn’t often make me laugh out loud but this book did multiple times.

I loved the strong female friendships that formed in this book and was glad to see that they were prioritised over boyfriends. I think Will’s character was very flawed but the motives for how he acted were very understandable as the pressure of trying to find friends and fit in when you first arrive at university is very strong and could easily push you to feel unable to stand up for yourself. I was pleased with the ending between Will and Phoebe and loved all the side characters that all had their own personalities like Arthur, Rita, Josh and Ed.

Reading this book was like taking a trip down memory lane and reliving my freshers experience and the writing drew me in so well it only took me a few days to finish as I didn’t want tear myself away from these loveable characters by putting it down. Five stars from me!

3.5/5 stars. This was pretty relatable to the college experience. Although, I never went through something as intense as Frosh week.

Both main characters were extremely flawed. I suppose that is the point of the book since they're both starting off in college. I was so happy that the main characters didn't get together because Luke Taylor really needed to figure himself out. He did Phoebe horribly twice in a short time and still thought he could ask her to be his girlfriend. I'm glad Phoebe's perception of him didn't convince her to say yes.
