Thereās more plot than romance, and I wouldnāt say itās super āhighā fantasyāthere is a map, but the world, races, magic, gods, etc. arenāt too complicated or confusing. The writing style is very readable and so fun with all the diff callbacks and character relationships.
āLoving Oraya was terrifying.
It required me to see things I didnāt want to see. Face things I didnāt want to face. Allow another soul to witness parts of myself I didnāt even want to acknowledge.
I now felt like such a fucking fool that I had never thought of it in that way, with that word, until this moment.
Of course it was love.
What else could it be, for someone to see that much of you? To see so much beauty in the parts of someone that they hate in themselves?
I almost wished I hadnāt had the realization, because it made what loomed ahead that much more devastating. Easier to have nothing to lose.ā

This sequel to The Serpent and the Wings of Night did not disappoint. If anything, it left me even more eager to continue reading stories from this world.
Oraya's entire world has fallen apart, and it's all due to one person: Raihn.
I love how Carissa Broadbent is doing a full series of books but releasing them as "duets" so we get to see multiple books focused on a certain character or two but still get to read about them as side characters in upcoming novels. And, while you don't necessary have to read the novella Six Scorched Roses to understand either book in this duet, I highly recommend reading it before or after The Ashes & the Star-Cursed King.
This world is so rich! I thoroughly enjoyed exploring it in this novel and can't wait to dive into it even more as Carissa expands it.
