A fun read. Oddly religious, but I didn't hate it. I'll continue the series.
Mein erster Sci-Fi Roman!

This book is FANTASTIC. I've been a fan of Claudia Gray's for a long time, and I think this is definitely her best work yet. The premise, the worldbuilding, the characters -- it's all intriguing and hooked me in from the very start. I can't wait to get my hands on the next one.
This one was a 3.5 star read for me. Good, but not fantastic.
The premise of this book alone should intrigue you. You have a human fighter pilot and a human-like mech working together to save the universe. I absolutely loved how Noemi and Abel's story unfolded. The progression of their relationship was extremely well done. They went from two people who had to work together due to programming to something much more. It was a really interesting dynamic between the two and I appreciated seeing a relationship grow between two unlikely characters. I also really appreciated that one of the two main characters was not entirely human (it reminded me of AIDAN from the Illuminae Files, if only he had a more prominent role).
That being said, the world was confusing at times. I'm not sure if there will be a map in the finished copy since I read an eARC, but I would have really liked to see something to show all the different planets that Noemi and Abel explore on their adventure through space. I think the book would have benefited from a bit more background on what was going on between Earth and Genesis. I got the overall big picture but I would have loved more specific details and knowledge about what happened in the past.
The ending of this book was also quite odd. There are definitely a few big questions that still need answered, but at the same time I feel like the story is complete. I'm really confused on how Claudia Gray is continuing with the next book after this. This is a planned duology so she obviously has more story to tell, I just do not see the need with how the arc of this book panned out.
Last thing I want to mention is how great so many of the secondary characters were in this book. Noemi and Abel met a lot of unique people on their adventure from many different backgrounds with different life stories. I loved getting to know these characters and how they impacted the story and helped our two main characters one their journey. I really hope we get to see more of them in the next book.
*Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC of the book*

Spoiler
One spoiler comment, I feel like it was completely unnecessary "character development" to kill off Noemi's one and only friend at the beginning of the book. This death was constructed as the reason Noemi had the motivation to go through with working with a Mech to destroy the gate. I just did not like using the death of the only friend someone has as the driving force for their actions.
ALL THE STARS!

I came upon this book by chance. I was browsing a local bookshop with my Mum, and I hadn't even heard of this book before but the cover drew me to it immediately. Then reading the synopsis, and realising it was a YA sci fi romance with a human and a ROBOT, made me know I needed this book. And I pretty much started it straight away when I got home.
I won't go into the plot, because it's rather complicated. To keep it brief, it's about a human girl called Noemi, who goes on a journey to save her planet with the help of an AI, AKA a mech, called Abel. But Abel is different to the other mechs, he's one of a kind and has almost human-like emotions. Noemi is a brilliant heroine, who really grows throughout the book. Abel is just a sweetheart and I LOVED his development, and the way his humanity evolves. The romance was a slowburn, which I love because instaromance is just ugh. It was done super well, and the ending was HEARTBREAKING, but I cannot wait for the sequel. Although, once again, I hate myself because I picked up a new release and now I have a year to wait. Ugh. Why?
Anyone who likes YA sci-fi, read this book. It's just incredible.

I can't believe I didn't review this right away, but I really freaking loved it. This was SUCH a great story, it kept me interested and engaged the whole way through, the pacing was fantastic. And the world building - THE WORLD BUILDING!! I love world building so, so much and this universe felt so rich and alive.
Noemi and Able are both really interesting, great characters who are full of flaws that just make you love them even more. The romance bits of the book are very understated, take a back seat to the plot at every turn, and that's what leaves me wanting more honestly.
Pretty sure this is my favorite novel of 2017, and I cannot wait to read the next one.

so so so good. super witty writing, and a story that while I was able to predict many of the twists, didn’t feel tired. I love all the characters so much and they all felt well developed. Any book that makes me laugh as much as this one did deserves 5 stars
I received a free copy of this from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Protagonist/s: 4/5
Love Interest/s: 4/5
World Building: 4/5
Plot: 4/5
Overall score 16/20 which is 4 stars.
Well damn, I wound up staying up late to finish this book.
Defy the Stars is the new sci-fi novel from Claudia Gray. It's a classic novel that'll be inhaled by fans of Amie Kaufman, Marissa Meyer and the like.
The story focuses on a human girl called Noemi from Genesis and a mech called Abel from Earth. In alternating chapters you read about their journey to save Genesis, the people they meet and the burgeoning relationship. It's an amazing book with a memorable cast of characters that ends in such a way you need more right away.
The world building could be a little more and there was a scene that randomly skipped at the end and confused me for a few seconds but as a whole this was a really gripping read and I would definitely recommend this to everyone.
