for me personally I find sci-fi in YA really hit or miss. This was definitely a hit! I enjoyed both main characters and the world building was great.

Second Read:
Same feels, but I felt like it just flew by too quickly! And I don't think I was quite as enamoured with it this time, but that may be because I only read it a couple years ago and hyped it up heaps in my memory. Aaaand I knew the twists were coming =(. But it is still a great read and worthwhile giving a go!

Oh. My. Gosh. This was freaking amazing!!!
I've read some of Claudia Gray's work before, and while decent, it was nothing special. This though... Defy the Stars tackles some important real world issues dealing with refugees, the environmental impact of humanity, and what it means to be a person - both good and bad.
Not only does it deal with important issues, but it brings us relatable, realistic characters that you have to root for. Honestly when I saw it was a love story with a person and a machine I was super put off, but it was done insanely well and Abel (the mech) was by far my favourite part of the book.
So we have a brilliant depiction of relatable issues and awesome realistic characters, but then we also get a feasible plot, cool science (which I actually found plausible and had no issues with for once), perfect pacing, loads of delicate foreshadowing, cool secondary characters, amazing world building, and realistic choices and consequences. This culminates in one awesome book.
I could not record this more. Seriously read it!
Warnings: very minor mentions of sex and prostitution but it takes up barely a few sentences. Nothing else!
Age: ages 12+ could read it, but more suitable for 14+ and adults

Never expected I would be hooked to a story like Abel and Neomi's.
Action packed, with a sprinkle of romance has definitely entised me to read more.

not a fan of the worldbuilding. the planets feel like cardboard backdrops, not like real fleshed out worlds that exist around the characters.
the story itself was cute tho.
