This one sat on my shelf for awhile. And I'm so sad that it did, because it was a really, truly entertaining read.
I'm not always a fan of space-set stories. Defy the Stars just pulled me so deep into the story that I didn't even have a moment of disinterest. From page one, the story begins and continues with action and adventure, and--of course--some romance.
A story of two people who shouldn't be. A story that had so much going on that I may, at times, had to reread a page or two--but, nonetheless, kept me riveted. But seeing two characters grow and become greater as the story goes on...It was amazing.
I am absolutely positively, eager to read the next in the series.

I loved this book! The only thing that I disliked about it is that the next book in the series isn't out! The first chapter or two has a lot of set up but after that, the book is fast paced and well-executed. I look forward to reading more in this series.
"Constellation: Gegen alle Sterne" hat eine spannende Geschichte und sympathische Charaktere, allerdings gibt es ein Herzstück, das nichts toppen kann. Abel! Dieser Charakter ist einfach großartig.
Abel ist sehr gut getroffen. Ein Merch, der Gefühle und Bedürfnisse entwickelt und mit jeder Seite menschlicher wird. Es ist unterhaltsam, wie er immer wieder den Besserwisser raushängen lässt und Noemi verdeutlicht, dass er ein hoch entwickelter Mech ist, der alles kann. Ich mag es sehr, wie Abel seine Reaktionen und Gefühle analysiert und herauszufinden versucht, was mit ihm los ist. Er ist keine bloße Maschine. Seine Handlungen und Gedankengänge werden immer gefühlvoller und menschlicher. Die Autorin hat es wunderbar rübergebracht, wie er nach und nach entdeckt, dass er nicht nur eine Maschine ist. Durch den Sichtwechsel konnte ich mich als Leser auch gut in Abel hineinversetzen.
Noemi ist ein sympathischer Charakter, der neben Abel allerdings etwas verblasst. Sie sucht einen Weg ihre Welt zu retten und stößt dabei auf Abel, der die Lösung ihrer Probleme zu sein scheint. Noemi entdeckt die anderen Planeten und entwickeln sich mit jeder neuen Information weiter und überdenkt die Grundsätze ihrer Heimat Genesis. Sie hat einen starken Gerechtigkeitssinn und der tritt öfter mal hervor. Besonders als ihr bewusst wird, dass Abel eben nicht nur ein einfacher Mech ist. Die beiden entwickeln sich zu einem guten Team. Neben den beiden treffen wir noch auf mehrere Charaktere, die in diesem und im nächsten Band eine größere Rolle spielen werden.
Gemeinsam mit Noemi bereisen wir zum ersten Mal die anderen Planeten. Neben Genesis und der Erde gibt es noch Cray, Stronghold und Kismet. Auf jedem Planeten gibt es einen Stopp, wir erfahren mehr von der Welt, mehr von den Auswirkungen der Erde und was wirklich los ist. Der Beziehungsaufbau zwischen Abel und Noemi nimmt einen großen Teil ein, die Entwicklung von Abel ist ebenfalls ein immer präsentes Thema. Zusammengeschnürt wird das alles von der Grundstory, dass die Erde am Aussterben ist, die Menschheit einen Zufluchtsort sucht und Genesis seine wunderbare Welt vor der Erde verteidigt, damit sich nicht alles wiederholen wird.
Die Handlung von "Constellation" hat mir super gefallen. Es ist durchweg spannend. Von Anfang bis Ende hat es mich neugierig gemacht und zum Lesen animiert. Es gab keinen Moment, wo ich mich gelangweilt habe. Allerdings hat mich das Ende ein bisschen ernüchtert. Den Ausgang habe ich mir anders vorgestellt, jedoch wird es noch einen weiteren Band geben und ich bin gespannt, was uns da erwartet.

How we wish part of it were true, the traversing of the galaxy and options available at the same time hope humanity does not go any lower or lose its humane nature.

Defy the Stars was a wonderfully enthralling new Light Young Adult Sci-Fi. By the time the second chapter closed, which was told from Abel's POV, I was hooked. This book was hard to put down. In some ways it was totally predictable—you know these two are going to work together and maybe get some feelings going, creating chemistry. Yet, in other ways, this one felt so fresh and new, and that was mainly due to the enjoyable and delightfully engaging voice of narration from Abel, and the lovely and touching bittersweet ending.
Abel is a mech. Now, to me the word "mech" is a large exo-suit of armor ... think Tony Stark in the huge Hulkbuster Iron Man suit from Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Construct-o-Mech skeleton Emmet from The Lego Movie, or even the soliders' ammo/armor suits in Edge of Tomorrow. So, it took me a while to reconcile the description of Abel with more of a traditional android or cyborg.
What didn't take me long to see was the fantastic narrative created by Abel's character. These two juxtaposed narratives are what allows the author to both show and tell throughout the story. By exploring the world through Abel's analytical eyes and neural processor, we can be told who Noemi is through his assumptions and the results of his observations. Seeing the world through Noemi's eyes and emotionally based brain and heart, we see the typical character novel and rationale of showing Noemi to the reader. We see her courage and generosity, her hurt and her rawness, as well as being told how courageous, resourceful, and unique she is from Abel reconciling his visual input.
Where Abel is literal and methodical in his reasoning, which is just both hilarious and informative at various times, Noemi is a wonderful combination of hard-steeled outer and a soft, gooey inner that she keeps hidden very well. Noemi is damaged and hurting, and her own personal task comes with having to reconcile Abel's humanness. Noemi talks about trying to find her personal moment of grace, understanding where she fits within the religions on her planet, Genesis. And, ironic enough, Abel's thirty years alone allowed him the chance to look within himself and have his own kind of moment of grace. Abel's uniqueness—no other mech was ever built to match how exceptional and human-like he is—is equal to saying every human being is unique, and that makes him extraordinary in a wonderfully ordinary way. These two characters complemented and played off each other in such splendid ways that I found myself wanting more. I loved that the novel closed like a stand-alone, but I wouldn't be opposed to revisiting these characters or this world with another book.

Very enjoyable!!! Has the perfect amount of action, suspense and even romance!
Ik vind het concept weer briljant, verschillende werelden die eigenlijk niets van elkaar begrijpen en daardoor oorlog voeren. Uit dit verhaal blijkt voornamelijk dat de mens alleen maar doet en weinig tot niet nadenkt. Ik vind Abel een prachtig karakter, zijn eigen twijfel op een gegeven moment is geniaal. Noemi is een sterke meid, die iets te veel wil voor wat ze eigenlijk aankan. Het verhaal zelf is goed geschreven, maar ik voelde mezelf helaas niet verdwalen naar deze wereld, en dat is juist iets waarom ik graag boeken lees. Dit boek is een deel 1, maar of ik deel 2 ga lezen? Er staan andere boeken hoger op mijn TBR.
I wouldn't say I loved it, on account of the first quarter - third of the book I just found dreadful and slow. But as soon as it started to pick up it kept me sitting at the edge of my seat until the end. There were moments I was so involved I forgot about work. Though, since Sci-Fi isn't really my thing, I'm not sure how I feel about the whole mech-human relationship. I know that they say that Abel "has a soul" but it still seems sort of weird...
