This book raised my blood pressure. A lot. LOL From the first chapter, the reader is thrown into an action-packed emergency - flight 1421 from Honolulu to San Francisco goes down in the ocean shortly after take off. There are engines on fire, a mess of an evacuation, and the plane eventually sinks 200 feet below the surface where the remaining survivors await rescue. Will and his daughter Shannon are among two of the trapped, and Chris - Will's estranged wife and Shannon's mom - is on the surface desperately devising a plan to save them. [Aside - I loved Chris' character! Can we get a series with her as the main character? She's a professional diver/welder/engineer and each scene with her was so great!]

Things got a bit technical at times, but Newman patiently explained things in a way that didn't detract from the story. This would make an excellent - and nerve wracking - movie! While I don't typically read action novels, I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would! I think it helped that Newman leaned into the human side of the characters in non-schmaltzy way. The scene between Chris and Annie? Grab a tissue. 4 stars.
