I've been slowly working my way through Thoreau's "Walking", when I find myself stuck in my car waiting for something. It's given me greater appreciation of Thoreau than my 10th grade American Lit readings of "Civil Disobedience" and bits of "Walden" gave me. Same with Shattuck's approach. He excerpts Thoreau's various essays about walking to and around various places in New England and finds meaning in them. Perhaps his essay on Maine would have spoken to me more in high school as a regular visitor, than the assigned writings did.

As for Shattuck's book, his prose integrated nicely with Thoreau's. I had no idea what to expect of this but felt compelled to try it due to the aforementioned picking through "Walking" and my increased wandering around the woods. Greatly enjoyed.
