I loved the language in this book. So many beautiful passages and quotes made me stop and think. I especially loved how Yaa Gyasi talked about Gifty's relationship with God. How she talked with him, how she literally wrote letters to him. I loved the rawness and honesty of it all. This personal approach to God was so comforting and beautiful to read about. There were so many beautiful points made, so many interesting thoughts expressed.
I love books about familial dynamics, emotional books with a hopeful note, filled with poetic lines, stories about faith. It reminded me of Red at the bone and On earth we're briefly gorgeous. They're all different and special on their own but I still think that if you like one of these three, you will probably like the other two. The authors somehow have a similar style.
All in all, I'm very glad I read this and I'm looking forward to reading Homegoing.

I also liked the book's perspective on the internal conflicts people who have been brought up in a religious setting face, and in particular how that interacts with the scientific point of view. Coming from a similar place myself I found that part very relatable.
Time to look for Gyasi's other books :)
