This book is extremely well-crafted. The characters are SO REAL. The story arc/plotline is very believable. The words thoughtfully chosen. I read mostly for entertainment and not mostly this type of novel. I actually picked this up due to a StoryGraph hosted reading challenge. I am not planning to rush out to read more books just like this, but I am glad to have read this one.

This novel reads like a memoir. In the story of a Ghanaian family dealing with life in a new country, abandonment, addiction and mental illness set in Hunstville, Alabama, we follow the footsteps of Gifty, a young woman working on her PhD. The story was interesting but I had issues with the transitions between time periods - I was often confused with high school Gifty and PhD Gifty dealing with her mother's issues. Maybe I wasn't paying attention enough.

For me, the book was good but not great.

What WAS great was Bahni Turpin's narration. She never fails me. Love her work.

Simply stunning. No sophomore slump for Yaa Gyasi! "Transcendent Kingdom" is very different from "Homegoing" but has the same beautiful and very effective writing. Every word, phrase, and sentence is perfectly crafted. The thought, emotion, and story in so few pages is incredible. This is the best fiction I've read this year.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Knopf for the advance copy!
