The original cyberpunk story. It's not a genre I particularly enjoy but as a science fiction fan I wanted to understand more of the sub-genre.
The plot reads like The Matrix crossed with James Bond with a lot of brand deals. Every object the protagonist uses, almost, is branded, and I am sure this is by design and a commentary on commercialism and capitalism. At first it took me out of the narrative until it clicked why everything had a familiar brand name.
Romance and spice is barely there, blink and you miss it, and perfunctory at best, which suits the characters and the story, but is wild after reading a lot of romantasy books recently.
The reader does a good job and is able to do a number of accents well.

I can really only come away with, "it was okay."
I can see how it would have been revolutionary reading for it's time. With modern day AI, robotics and all the other scifi that has piled on over the years this now feels mediocre. With technology elements feeling dated and still within the confines of 1980, it didnt present anything that felt like "Wow! I can see this happening in the future."
Only thing that would be cool is if we could enter the matrix or a cyber world the same way Case could.

While the world is vividly imagined, I never engaged with the story nor the characters. At no point did I feel a sense of worry or dread for them, nor did they ever sway my passions. End the end I felt like I was back where I'd started: with no sense of destination nor accomplishment.
