DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Tried it twice and it just could not get into it. I wanted to like it but I just couldn't

This review is being written years after I first read Neuromancer.

Holy fuck. This is from 1984? This was truly spectacular and I really am not surprised it became a foundational text for cyberpunk as a genre.

The only reason it does rate lower from me is because near the end I was getting slightly confused with what exactly was happening, but I did eventually get there. While some of this is on the book, I recall some was certainly me being busy at the time.

Shall have to reread and update this review.

ngl i don’t think i ever fully understood what was going on. i think part of it was because i listened to it as an audiobook, and this was definitely one of the harder books to follow as an audiobook. all the different aspects of the worldbuilding were really cool and interesting to see (especially considering all the tech and ai that we have today), but i didn’t really enjoy it. i want to reread one day in physical form to see if i enjoy it more

I'm a total sucker for Cyberpunk as an idea but this had issues.

PROS: Really neat world building, flowery writing that was super conducive to the drug trips and hacking scenes and really good dialogue.

CONS: The flowery writing made the action scenes impossible to parse. You can't use "she" as a descriptor for characters when there are two female characters in a scene at once and expect the reader to know what's happening. The first 50 pages were completely inscrutable, which sort of works given the protagonist was supposed to be tripping the entire time, but come on.

Worth a read to see where some of the early footprints of Cyberpunk as a genre come from, but that's about it. As a heist novel it has some interesting beats, but it's just a bit of a mess.

I remember reading it in high school and not really liking it. And that was the only thing I remembered about that book. Which made me thought that I just didn't get it. So wanted to try again with a little more matured brain.
I still didn't like it.
But I did appreciate it.
The world-building and the tech was interesting.
But the story itself wasn't that engaging. There were good parts but reading the book, I had to work on keeping my attention. I'm still on the fence if I liked the third arc of the book or not.
But after finishing it, the world and the ideas in it are still in my thoughts.
So it's like a lot of other classical must-reads, they may seem boring, but there's always something that sticks with you.
