I picked this series up after a booksagram rec of “spicy things to read after an ACOTAR series hangover”. It really doesn’t come close to that series high, but it does have a few things going for it.

I like most of the world building, which happens mainly in the first two books, but quite a bit of the Faery world is still left to discover within the 3rd book with, it seems, more to learn in the upcoming 4th. I also liked the themes of a future fight for equality and plots of revenge and rebellion.

The series is very much centered around the MFC and MMC’s relationship and mate bond, so you don’t get much secondary character development to invest in beyond wanting the main villain dead.  The main characters’ sexual relationship seems to keep promising consent and sexual liberation, only to result in scenes where there is one initial “yes” and a lot of pushing past what the MFC wants or is comfortable with (like plugging her nose during a BJ so she can swallow him deeper and is gasping for air 🤢).

I feel like most kinks can vibe well with a book as long as characters and motivations are written cohesively, but this main relationship just misses the mark for me.

Question that has been plaguing me since the second book: in the 2nd book she has a thing for controlling snakes, but why hasn’t she tried even once the remove the snake from Caldris’ heart?  Like use your golden threads and just give it a try?  If it doesn’t work, cool, go on with the plot, but at least try once.

The plot of the third book is definitely rougher to follow (for the characters); they go through so much in this book, and once you're attached to them it's hard to get through the whole thing. However, also impossible not to. The ending has me in such anticipation and anxiety for the fourth book.

TWs & content warnings:
  • This book is much darker than the two before it, including much more graphic descriptions of torture, and several mentions (but not descriptions) of rape/sexual assault (not by any main characters)

‘She wanted to know if I saw myself as the hero of my story, but I didn't. I only saw myself as the villain of hers.’

Thank you to Harper L. Woods for an ARC of this book, here is my honest review:

This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2023 and I was not let down!!

I feel like this book was more focused on the mystery of Estrella powers and the villain Mab which I actually really enjoyed. There was so much information that was given and it gave so much mysterious vibes with so many moments that just left you questioning everything.
I also surprising love Mab, not like I love her like I want her as a friend but like love to hate her ya know? Like there is no redeeming qualities about her but she is a good villain, like I hate her…but I love that I hate her.

Also Caldrius and Estrella’s relationship in this makes my heart just melt, there’s a bit less of moments between them but when we get them they are amazing. There were spicy moments, sweet moments, a little bit of banter and I just love them both so much.

I will say that cliffhanger hurt! Like Adelaide/Harper…are you really going to leave me on that?! I need to know more now!!

I will say that I do feel that at times I feel like the book was a bit slow and I wish things would speed up but once I got to a certain part of the book I read maybe 80% of the book in one sitting…I don’t have a problem…just an addiction.

Anyway! I highly recommend this series, I feel if you loved the SJM universe and From Blood and Ash you might enjoy this series. Please check TWs and CWs for all books as these books are on the darker side! 18+

Happy reading 🤍
