2024 March 28: Update after re-read: I still stand by this review! I did read it again 11 years later, and liked enough that I read the last 400 pages in one sitting...

Finally! A finish to this grand epic of a series. Sanderson did a great job of working from Robert Jordan's notes and partial work to finish this thing off, and do it well. Since this is the last battle, much of this book is devoted to describing the actual fighting (in one giant chapter, no less!), but we at last have closure to the vast majority of the plot lines.

This is still one of my favorite fantasy series, and I certainly think that in 5-10 years, I'll be able to pick it up for a re-read from start to finish and enjoy it again. Now, if only they could make this into a TV series that would somehow not suck. Maybe we can borrow those GOT guys in their off season...

A satisfying enough conclusion to my favorite book series, with an awesome 100 page chapter. I wish that we got more of the aftermath of The Last Battle, as well as people actually mourning Rand (his friends didn't seem to mind his death), as well as secondary characters getting some recognition and not just dropping like flies. But finishing this series felt amazing.

There is a raw creativity in Robert Jordan that is impressive and shows on the concepts that he created in this series. Some of those concepts will stay with me forever, such as the whole magic system premise and the natural consequences that it t harbors.

The worst downfall is that each one of those great concepts feel underdeveloped, the series delivery on the expectation it creates feels underwhelming in every aspect. Out of each book I left feeling a number of things could be better explored, sometimes feeling it is not progressing, and for a 14 book series that is not something to be taken lightly.

Another issue is the poor character writing. While great in establishing a rich culture, geography and politics background, throughout the series the characters lose distinctive motives, if they had any and it becomes glaring apparent that they rarely even had their own voices, besides a few mannerisms that easily become repetitive in the work’s 12000 pages.

I don’t recommend it, but I’m glad I’ve read this series, for its qualities, and it was a great journey, being my number one go-to to pass the time in buses, trains and planes. The devil lies in figuring out if the pros outweigh the cons, and if you have what it takes to power through so many books and feel little closure in the end.

Probably one of the most epic "epic fantasy" books ever written.

In my opinion Sanderson finished the series in a way Jordan couldn't have hoped to.
