This book is the second in a series of three books about John Lewis (former representative for Georgia's 5th District, who passed away in 2020) and his role in the civil rights movement. This book follows Lewis' role in the Freedom Riders movement, a movement to test the desegregation of buses in the United States in the 1960s. The bravery that Lewis and his friends held as Freedom Riders is beyond any words that I could write. I had heard of the Freedom Riders while learning about the civil rights movement in middle/high school but the level of bravery, courage, and determination that these individuals showed in the face of rage and danger is beyond any understanding I had at the time. This graphic novel and John Lewis' story is so important- I would love to see this implemented further in schools to use as a teaching tool (and I've heard of schools who have!).

Lewis's narrative of the Civil Rights Movement continues and the aggression and violence becomes even more sickening. The visuals here are so visceral and the message behind March continues to be as important today as it was over 50 years ago.

One hates to use the trite phrase "history come alive," but holy cow - I've never been so emotionally engrossed by a graphic novel before. Really spectacular story-telling and an unbelievable glimpse into one of the most important moments of 20th century American history.
