this book has the amazing ability to both inform and connect us to the people and emotions and tension of the time period in a way that makes it feel visceral but also empowering. you are swept along with Lewis and you don't want to sit still and take the abuse, you want to act. he shows you the nuance and behind-the-scenes tension and debates going on even within the civil rights movement. its super important to show the thought processes and how people had to compromise and listen and learn and still hold to their principles. there was a lot to weigh and you can see how the efforts of both direct action and meetings and speechmaking played important roles. i've been very impressed with the ability of graphic novels to bring certain stiff history (as I learned it in school) to life.
