Hilarious OTT characters, a great palate cleanser between heavier books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25/6.

Declan is a monster hunter since he was a teen and he felt like he was doing, wasn't the path he wanted to continue on so  he decided to be a elemental school teacher but the organization he worked out ain't about to let him go for him especially when there seems to be an outburst of chimeras in the area.
Speaking of Chimeras, Lake enters the chat. He has been disguised as a human for awhile and the first he meets Declan he wants to eat him up and have him for himself whereas Declan can't decide if he is a monster or human. It's kinda hilarious really how these two behave every time they meet.
The humor and sarcasm are right up my alley and Lake is just so entertaining and what's even better is the fact that even though Declan doesn't want anything to do with what Lake says or does, he can't help but be secretly amused and help him one way or the other.
I loved them together.

I do enjoy Alice Winters' writing. And the plot was.. interesting, I guess? But every main pairing in her books seems like the exact same dynamic--one goofy and somewhat murderous and the other long-suffering but ultimately too in love/lust to deny said goofy character. It's a great dynamic, don't get me wrong. I just.. feel like you could almost sub any pair from any of her books and things would be fairly okay plot-wise.

4.5⭐️ - this is pretty typical Alice and I love her for it. This was funny, exciting, tense, sexy, and just fun to enjoy.

I don’t read many shifter/monster books but this reminds me how much I love them when done well. This had mystery and intrigue, while being fairly fast paced.

Lake and Declan had such a hysterical dynamic. Lake was super lusty for Declan instantly, while Declan wanted absolutely nothing to do with Lake. Naturally Lake wore him down, much to Declan’s dismay.

I struggled to rate this book because it took me a long while to get through.
I am a fan of Alice Winters so I knew what I was getting into with the writing style and character choices but this one just felt a bit long for my taste.
I did enjoy it but probably would have appreciated the pacing of the story to be a bit quicker.

seriously OTT

This was not my favourite from the author

If Leland from the Assassin series was a chimera, he would be Lake. Completely. I don’t think it worked well here. Lake was too much sometimes; it felt frenetic and ridiculous.

Looking back there were things I liked well enough - the world was interesting (although I have questions), Mittens was cute, The monsters were different. It was enough that I may read the next book, but it won’t be top of my list.

When Alice writes and Michael narrates you just know you need to listen to it , you know there’s going to be laughs galore and Michael makes the characters even funnier .
