Matthew Perry's pre-mortem autobiography is a harrowing account of his drug addiction and the extent to which his drug abuse impacted his career and most importantly, his health.  While he often straddles the line between pathetic and self-important, it's an interesting read. Perry isn't a natural writer, but he has something important to say and we should listen. I'm sure glad I did.

This book had been on my TBR ever since it was released. And after his passing, I just had to read it immediately. I am not a super fan of Friends and don't quote from it every day or remember every single episode, but I did like the show. I also admired him for his struggle with sobriety. And what we knew of it before this book didn't even begin to scratch the surface. I listened to the audiobook since he narrated it, and I figured hearing him tell his own story would be the best way.

This story is heartbreaking. His childhood wasn't terrible, but it affected him in a way that made it out to be one of the worst things people can go through. I am one of those people who still has her parents alive and married, although they are both getting older. But how it affected him, as well as the rest of his life, is unfortunate.

I had no idea how many times he'd been in rehab and that upon writing this book, he was still struggling. It's such a sad story, and now that he has passed, it becomes even more tragic.

RIP Matthew Perry.
