Having felt somewhat let down by the ending of the first book after so much build-up, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself liking this book even more. Some questions are answered from The Inheritance Games, and some questions are asked presumably ready to be answered in The Final Gambit.

Picking up right after the events of the first book, we follow Avery and the Hawthorne boys as a new game begins. This time their quest is more of a cross between friendly competition and working as a team now that Avery has been accepted by the Hawthorne boys as one of their own. She stands to lose the most (though not necessarily financially). Having uncovered some family secrets, she's determined to find connections and answers. Who is her father? Is she really of Hawthorne blood? What had her mother kept from her for her entire life?

Part of what I've been enjoying about this series is the absurdity of it all. I'm not the target age group so I have little patience for the high school drama that inevitably comes in a YA such as this, but something about the eccentricity of the Hawthorne family is intriguing. It's grandiose and impractical but dang it, it's fun.

This book definitely reads as a lengthy bridge into the next book (though doesn't end on as much of a cliffhanger as the previous), however, I enjoyed the intricacies of the family. I'm not quite sure what to expect going forward but I'm excited to find out!

One of the best books i've read since June. I'm so attached to these characters it's insane. HIGHLY recommend. The mystery and the ROMANCE. SO GOOD. The reason het this book isn't a 5 stars is because i'm soooooooooo picky lol.

I loved this book so much!

So much stuff that was mentioned in the first book was fully delved into and wrapped up in this book - or at least, it looks like it has been…

I just love the progression in the Hawthorne brothers and Avery’s relationship - it’s not 100% ride or die but it’s getting there!

I’m so looking forward to seeing what they get up to in the next book!

I read this book in two sittings and I am seriously in love with the writing style, the type of storytelling it is, as well as all the flaws of each and every character that only makes them feel more real. This book took many twist and turns and I was quite surprised about how things unfolded.
I cannot wait to get on with the last book!

What an amazing sequel to an already amazing beginning. I loved every part of this story, the mystery, the love story, the pining, the ins and outs. It was such a fun story and i absolutely can not wait until the third and final book drops in a couple of weeks.

This book was picked up cause I wanted to finish the mystery that was the first book. I wasn’t expecting  all the emotions I had while reading this. Maybe I’m a sucker for this type of story but I’m so excited for the third book to come out. The end left me in tears. The only way I can describe this book is devastating.

I am unabashedly team Grayson. I know the past two books have been dedicated to developing Avery and Jameson but COME ON! When the author is so elusive and only throws us a bone once in awhile I get attached wayyy more easily than if there’s consistent action. It’s one of my flaws to be honest. I love this series so far, it’s so fun and incredibly satisfying to feel everything pull together. That said something is preventing me from falling in love with the books. Maybe it’s how fast I’m reading them or my preconceived notions. I’m also glad I’m late to the party and only starting this series now despite relentless recommendations. This way I can binge the entire series and not have to wait and forget important details like I had to with A Good Girls Guide to Murder. The quality has been super consistent with this series and I’m so thankful for that.
