I loved this book so much more than I remember! To be honest, the first 1/2 or 2/3 were lowkey not it for me, I was convinced this book was getting a 4 star rating but the end was SO GOOD. THE SIREN SCENE IS THE BEST THING EVER. Such good character development! Such good twists even when I know what they are!
Things I loved:
- Percabeth development: need I say more? So. Much. PERCABETH! Can’t wait to see development in the later books.
- Addressing and overcoming differences: Tyson was a great way of implicitly teaching readers about prejudice and overcoming it
- Twists: I literally knew what the twist was but it was still so good. Lowkey so daunting and changed everything, really good at setting up the darker tone that occurs in Titan’s Curse and forward
Things I didn’t like:
- Percy’s illogical maturity: I get that Percy is now aware of the whole Greek world he’s a part of, but he seemed oddly mature, brave, and tactically smart for someone who hadn’t been in contact with that stuff for a year. Would have expected this kind of Percy later in the series
- Re-explaining almost EVERYTHING: the beginning felt like such an insane rehash of all the Greek stuff, like I’m sure if you’re reading this book, you probably read the first one and even if it had been a while there’s no need to re-explain everything
- Story aura?: not sure how to word this. It felt like the objective came up so unnaturally or was written in a way that was weird, felt like the side adventures were kind of random in the Sea of Monsters, especially Circe and the Sirens— they had reason to be there and you’d think they’d know better
- Pacing: Way. Too. Fast. I get it’s a kids book and it’s PJO which tends to be very quick, but this was almost insane. The beginning was almost too much, I didn’t even know what was going on. 100% this book could have and should have been longer

Not much happens. I'm not a big fan of the prose. There's some development here, but in my opinion, I didn't find the plot intriguing.
I've been reading the Percy Jackson to my kids at bedtime each night. We've seen the movies for the first 2 books in the series and we all really enjoyed them so I thought the books would be fun to read together to see the inconsistencies between the book and movie versions. I first started reading this series for my kids, but then I started reading them for me too. Last night, I finished The Sea of Monsters even though my kids fell asleep before the end. I'm sorry kids, I couldn't wait to finish it to move onto The Titan's Curse. Would absolutely recommend this book series to everyone. I can't wait to see what happens in Book 3 with the return of a child of the Big 3.
