The Day of the Triffids is a book that addresses very realistically what an worldwide apocalyptic event would look like. It really makes you think about what it truly means to lose the systems that keep our world running, what it truly takes to rebuild. Throughout the story, you hear many different points of views on the best ways to survive, whether it’s worth it to keep going - and it leaves you with faith that even in the hardest times, if there’s even a little bit of hope, humanity will find a way to survive.

Although that was pretty interesting to read and reflect on, I wish the book had  a “little less conversation, a little more action, please.” I expected the triffids to be a bigger part of the story, for there to be a whole lot more action-packed scenes. There were a few moments that left me on the edge of my seat, but a lot of it is just conversations or  summaries of what happened over long stretches of time. Even though sometimes it was painfully boring, I stuck with it because I was curious about where the story was headed. I was also really intrigued by the similarities I saw to ‘28 Days Later,’ ‘The Walking Dead,’ and other similar media. It’s cool reading a book that likely influenced the zombie/invasion stories that came after it.

Overall, the book wasn’t interesting enough for me to ever read it again honestly, but I’m still glad I finished it!

I enjoyed this a lot. An interesting glimpse into the future through the lens of the past. Some of the dystopian themes hit a little too close to home in the present moment though...

Everyone who knows me in real life knows I had beef with the chapter (chapter 2, I believe) that focused on a lot of wordy science and technology behind the triffids and their creation, but a lot of sci-fi novels seem to have parts like that so I’m not really upset at all.

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! There are definitely parts that read now as a bit dated in terms of views and actions, but nonetheless a very good read with characters that I didn’t expect to like very much but did after all.
