The discontent and mental disintegration of a petty official in St. Petersburg. Although I thought the plot was charming, I had more trouble understanding the language than with “Der Mantel” and would love to reread the story in English.

“Die ganze Stadt lüftete die Mützen und so auch ich; trotzdem ließ ich durch nichts erkennen, daß ich der spanische König wäre. Ich hielt es für sehr unschicklich, das für allen Leuten zu enthüllen; alldieweil ich mich vorher unbedingt bei Hof vorstellen muß” (73)
