Very fun and interesting story. I liked the varied presentation and the way these two prestigitators just could not give up the ghost

"Already, without once writing a falsehood, I have started the deception that is my life. The lie is contained in these words, even in the very first of them. It is the fabric of everything that follows, yet nowhere will it be apparent."
I was following everything right until the end..... oh well. Still very good and entertaining, more than I was expecting.

So much better than the movie which I already thought was good. My actual reading would be a 4.5 if I was allowed to give half stars. The flow of the characters' narratives was a bit difficult to understand at first with an audio book, but I think if I were reading instead of listening, it would have been fine. I really enjoyed the ending!

I have such mixed feelings about this book. I respect it as a highly original plot and the source material for one of my all-time favorite movies, but I inevitably compare it to the movie. In the book, the first 75% was slow, then the last 25% was weird. Those who are looking for weird might not hold out long enough to get to it, while those who are looking for normal might be put off by the ending. The rampant infidelity and the supernatural element also surprised me. This is one of the rare instances where I like the movie better. Nevertheless, I do appreciate the author who invented these iconic characters, as well as his ability to convincingly write in the style of the late 1800s.
Graphic: Child death, Death, Violence, Murder
Moderate: Body horror, Infidelity, Miscarriage, Terminal illness, Medical content, Suicide attempt, Alcohol
Minor: Addiction, Pregnancy

Peccato
Didn't grab me, I'm afraid. The idea itself is tremendous but I found the epistolary parts just too slow and confusing; and I felt rather let down at the end. One of those unusual books where the characters and plot are interesting but the setting is barely there.
If this book was pure historical fiction, it would have been great. Reading the writing of dueling stage magicians? Fantastic! I liked hearing their sides of events that transpired, and the different mediums of the two (an autobiography vs a journal) was a nice choice.
If this book was straight sci-fi, I'd also like it a lot! I'm not a fan of steampunk, but magicians inventing crazy devices to one-up each other? Awesome! Even if the workings of the machines were flimsy, it would be a fun read.
Alas, The Prestige combines these themes in a sloppy way, loosely threading them together with a strange, foreshawdow-heavy framing device. There were parts that I enjoyed, but they just didn't seem to fit together. Heck, the ending of Angier's story would probably be better suited for its own short story (I say this as a compliment) rather than the ending of a mostly realistic novel. I guess I just wanted a more clever resolution than 'Nikola Tesla did it'.
Ah well, despite my complaints, I didn't hate it and I think it still had nice parts. I think Julia deserved better though.
