American Cult features over 20 artists to tell stories of various cults in United States history.  There were different approaches to narration and storytelling for each cult group.  The first-person reflection/reminiscent POV through the eyes of a teen in the Sullivanians is really effective.  While an all-knowing POV explained the complexities of the MOVE cult well.  For me, the standouts were the stories on: Warren Jeffs, NXIVM, Westboro Baptist, and the Sullivanians.  These are just a quick glimpse into the cults and only scratch the surface.  There are plenty of books and other true crime media to delve into them deeper.  There's definitely enough cults in our history for there to be a sequel book.

Any content warning you could think of is in this book so read with care.

I wasn't particularly impressed by this book. Each cult given a short chapter, some of which were interesting and some were misses. A few cults didn't go into the cult itself, assuming that you knew enough outside of this book. The artistic style was varied, and there were a few chapters that you could barely read because of the art. I don't think I would recommend this book, but it wasn't horrible.

I loved this book, and the only negative was I wanted more information from each chapter. I liked the first hand accounts and perspective of the research done on each cult, and just wanted more about each story.

American Cult is quite an interesting exercise in non-fiction writing. Many graphic artists have come together to each develop a comic about an American born cult.
I learned about many cults, so I had never previously heard of.
While each comic artist gave a general view and some details of the cult they told the story of, that’s all it was- a general overview. I would have appreciated more details, or perhaps a further reading page at the end of the book.
Most fascinating in the compilation of comics are those comics by former cult members. These few offered the most emotional and “view from inside” look at the groups they had once been part of.
