This is definitely one of the best dragon books I’ve read. Serafina is a delight and owns her mistakes but the growth she has is heart lifting. We follow nearly all the characters from the last book and they’re all wonderful. They included a trans-woman of color and I have an inking there’s another book with her and I’m for sure gonna read it.
Hartman captures the angst and struggle of the half dragons. Of the abuse they suffer at the hands of both humans and dragons. And when they find community In each other, I was pulled in by their genuine love.
I nearly cried in the end.
In a good way.

I was loving pretty much everything about this until the end. Almost everything about the ending was anti-climactic and unsatisfying. I did like the epilogue quite a bit even though that too was unsatisfying.

If I played a game of would you rather books version it would be something like this :

Would you rather sleep with no covers in a cold room for two months or dnf Shadow Scale over and over until you force yourself to finish it cause you had asked for it as a gift cause Seraphina was so good.

I’d gladly freeze for two months.

8yos of suffering with this book. Abdo and Bird guy deserved better!!
