I am in love with how Emily portraits a variety of relationships!

2.5 stars, rounded up. I wish I loved this book as much as everyone else did, but I just didn’t.
This personally is a pass for me. I didn’t like the structure of the book where it’s constantly flipping between past and present. For my mind as a reader, I don’t handle that back and forth very well. I really only cared about the present story and wanted to keep that story moving forward, and it felt like the book was 50/50 flashbacks and present day. (Maybe even more flashbacks than present story.)
There were WAY too many characters to keep track of in the friend group. I really struggled to keep everyone’s names straight and frequently mixed them up. At one point, I considered creating a chart on my white board in my office so I stopped mixing everyone up.
The story was sweet, but the plot lacked for me. It felt like everything already happened and you were arriving at the last 5% of the story. I know that the flashbacks matter and are just another vehicle to present the story, but personally I felt like most of the flashbacks made me think “so…what does have to do with me? This already happened, so why are we going backwards?” I just wanted more depth from the story.
I found the banter between the two main characters in a lot of the flashbacks (but also in the present story) to be too perfect. It didn’t feel like those conversations would realistically happen.
I don’t know why it didn’t resonate with me the way it seemed to with other people. It might have been just how I felt personally going into the book that overshadowed how I felt about what I read.

This was my lucky dip pick at our Bookclub Christmas dinner, last year. It is a light and quick holiday read. I love the bright colours on the cover.
