This book is very well written, but I hated the characters. Not the way they were developed, the people themselves. In some ways this gets a higher rating than I would normally give for enjoyment, simply because it is such a good book. Still, reading it has left me slightly ill at ease. It is very interesting to know some of the background and is fascinating to think of how shocking it was considered at the time. In some ways, there are aspects which still would be, especially in the South, where I was raised. Overall, I am very glad I was introduced to and read it.

I couldn't give it four stars because the ending crushed me. My heart dropped and I had tears in my eyes as what happened was such a shock. I loved the writing but the storyline was tragic. I found Sue to be an annoying character and I think Jude deserved better than her.

I’ve been finding recently that I have absolutely no time or interest for books written by men in the 19-20th century. I find their voices entirely irrelevant to the current climate, or else their lasting relevancy isn’t something I’d care to examine; that is, misogyny never dies.
