'Vampire State Building' by Ange and Patrick Renault with art by Charlie Adlard is a graphic novel that races by and is shamelessly fun to read.

A group of friends meet on the observation deck of the Empire State Building to bid farewell to one of them. Unbeknownst to them, there is evil waking in the building. It calls to others in the city and the undead will rise to feast. Will the group of friends make it out unchanged?

This was kind of like Die Hard meets an 1970s disaster movie. It reads way to fast, and I had a great time reading it. The art is pretty great. I'm sure I'd find things to dislike about it if I wanted, but it was a really fun ride.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Although the beginning was a bit rushed to my taste, leaving me feeling lost and confused for a bit, the pieces fall where they belong to and it becomes obvious you’re about to see madness at its fullest and the rawest side of human nature: survival. I found the idea intriguing and appealing, and liked what it could become. We’ve all seen the same old creature-based apocalypse, but this comic took it to a different level, where the threat is obvious to the world since the first moment. I would like more worldbuilding and character development, but it was still a good reading.

Vampire State Building, by Ange, Patrick Renault, Charlie Adlard
★★★☆☆
144 Pages
Content Warning: blood, gore, violence

Vampire State Building was an original concept with dark, gritty artwork. I found the artwork fitted the vampires better than the humans, who were left a little basic and indistinct. I thought the plot was a bit thin, with few explanations that left it feeling more like a horror slasher movie, where you just know 90% of the cast are going to die, from stupid decisions, and there's going to be no satisfying conclusion. Which is exactly what happened here.
The ending was rushed, the conclusion simple and basic, and I really wanted more of the folklore, the history, the motivation of the vampires. These guys were basically labelled “vampires” and it was expected that we knew everything we needed to know. When a hint of their history did make an appearance, it was boring and given in dialogue by someone who had literally just Googled a term and found their entire history revealed online. I wanted proper exploration of the vampires, an explanation for why there were 1000s of homeless people who were actually vampires, who had never once tried to wake the God vampire, what their culture was, why it had begun, and if there were more like them. If this had happened in the past, if it would happen again in the future.

Sadly, all my questions were left unanswered, lost in the sub-plot romance and the convenient plot of an army recruit happening to be right in place to fight the Big Bad.

Unfortunately, it failed to impress this reader, who has seen vampires in all shapes and forms, but never dismissed in this offhand fashion that makes then less of a threat and more of a convenient plot point.

This is the quote at the beginning of the story, and I really hoped it would have a HUGE impact on the book but...it didn't. This quote set me up for a story I never really got, but really wanted.

this is a very good graphic novel about vampires from the creator of The walking Dead so that tells you right there that it is really really good.I love the art style and I love the story it shows vampires in their natural scary view.

*A Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for a honest and unbiased review*

Hello Fellow Readers!

I really have been in the mood for horror and when I saw this I knew this would check all the boxes and it did. I wanted evil vampires, I wanted blood, and I wanted there to be a hero, but while it gave me everything I wanted I still didn't feel fulfilled. Maybe it was just too cliche? But I didn't feel any connection to the characters, so when someone died it didn't affect me to much.

Terry was okay, a man who is going through some (actually a lot) of stuff, he's about to be shipped off and his friends meet at the empire state building to watch the sunset and remind he what he's leaving behind. Honestly, I would like to read more about Terry without all the vampire stuff I think that would make for some interesting reading.

Overall, a good horror Graphic Novel with vampires.

Campy, bloody, and fun. I think they made this comic just because they came up with the cool name. It starts off foolish, it makes no sense. Stupid love relationship issues. No one is safe. But I actually found myself interested in the silly story.
Very creative art for the vampires even though the humans were a little flat and messed up artistically.
It was quick, it was fun, the monsters were interesting. Over all, much better than expected.

Great graphics - I loved the depiction of the vampires. The legend of the Hamatsa was a really cool addition to the vampire mythology. I loved the use of fire and the single setting for the bulk of the story.

It was ok. I thought it would be something really unique but it really wasn’t.

The title pretty much sums the story in it: The Empire State building is basically a pantry filled with humans that end up as meals for the vampires that attack the city. They’re called the Hamatsa and though we don’t really know their origin –except, perhaps, that they came from an ancient culture-, the creatures are quite scary to say the least, and only fire can take them down.

Now, I was craving a good, old-fashioned vampire story and this did live up to my expectations. The art style is SUPERB and I can’t complain even if I wanted to. The pages feel like watching a movie so it’s kind of refreshing to see such a polished art style. Unfortunately, the story in itself is not that strong, but perhaps this is due to the length of the graphic novel. I must admit that I couldn’t connect with anybody and they kind of feel flat to me, but the ambient and the wide shots in general are top notch.

I would totally recommend you to read this if you’re a fan of graphic novels and supernatural creatures such as vampires!
