It was good and had nice characters but completely different from what I'm used to reading by Park. And I'll recommend it to kids but not the best book I've ever read.

Pretty good middle grade fantasy, lots about animals and morals. I dunno, just kind of fell off at the end for me, a little unbelievable

Apothecary fantasy books aren’t typically my cup of tea. There’s something about plant magic that just doesn’t appeal to me. With that being said, it did take me a short while to get into this book. However, I did push through and, once I got into it, I was thrilled about it! I was consistently looking forward to reading it, and when I was reading it, I didn’t want to put it down.

I really enjoyed the relationship that the author created between Raffa and Garith. I thought it was really well done and had a unique dynamic of cousins instead of siblings. I’m probably most excited about where their dynamic goes in future books. There’s a lot of great potential here! I also really liked Raffa’s connection with Echo (his little bat friend) and his tenderness towards Bando and Twig (his little raccoon buddies). His softness and friendship with animals is endearing, and I’m excited to explore that further, too.

Trixin was a character that I didn’t feel was necessary to the story. She did help him get into the Commons and got hired for his uncle Ansel, but beyond that, she didn’t serve much of a greater purpose. It seemed as though Raffa could’ve succeeded without Trixin in the mix. Maybe she’ll have more purpose in the rest of the series!

Adventure, batfriends, and goes significantly further into medical ethics than I was expecting.

NEXT BOOK. NEXT BOOK.

Raffa is the son of apothecaries and a very talented young apothecary himself. He sees and hears things as he is combining herbs that allow him to create perfect mixtures. When an injured bat crashes into his house, Raffa and his cousin Garith venture into the Forest of Wonders to find a vine that his great grandmother once found, something his father thinks may be the bat's only hope. They find the vine, but the effects when they try it are much more than they had expected. Raffa sets off to the city to warn Garith and is even more surprised by what he finds happening there. There is plenty of humor sprinkled through this adventure. A fabulous start to a new series! Highly recommend for grades 3 & up.
