This was very hit or miss for me it feels like there was two different people who wrote this because half of this is the best essays ive ever read and the other half took me weeks to read. My biggest takeaway is that Babitz was so real for hating San Francisco it sounds unbearable and I cant even imagine how much worse it’s gotten.

“I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind's door at 4 a.m. of a bad night and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends. We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget. We forget the loves and the betrayals alike, forget what we whispered and what we screamed, forget who we were.”

California themed read, first Didion read. Mostly loved this. Skimmed a couple of the essays (the movie one in particular) but overall adore her writing and her point of view.

Good stuff. Some of the pieces I wished were longer, but that’s just how it goes, I suppose.

She do write well.

The faclon cannot hear the falconer

California propaganda, but I didn’t fall for it. She’s a master tho!
